What do you see that others don’t?

Conferred by: University of the Arts Singapore

A challenge that needs a different approach. A system that could work better. A possibility waiting to be explored.

The Master of Design in Design Leadership and Innovation is a practice-led programme for experienced professionals from diverse backgrounds who want to challenge established ways of working, see the bigger picture and turn ideas into action.

Beyond solving problems. Towards shaping systems.

Whatever your professional background, today’s most complex challenges rarely belong to one discipline.

Addressing them requires the ability to look beyond the immediate problem, understand the wider system and recognise where change can begin.

The Master of Design in Design Leadership and Innovation brings professionals from diverse backgrounds together to explore new ways of approaching complex challenges. Through critical enquiry, collaboration, fieldwork and real-world intervention, you will learn to question established practices, work across disciplines, connect different perspectives and turn ideas into action.

Engagement in real-world conditions through situated inquiry, this engagement grounds experimentation in in-situ contexts, enabling insights that are regionally attuned and globally transferable.

Develop the capabilities to transform insights into tangible and meaningful change.

Triple-core Framework

Built on three interconnected pillars — Critical Design, Socio-ecological thinking and Planetary Health — this framework provides different ways to understand how people, places and systems are interconnected and identify where design can make a difference.

Develop the mindset to design for a resilient and equitable future.

Dual Vision Cones

Design Leadership and Design Innovation work in tandem, combining strategic influence with methodological experimentation to drive institutional transformation and implement innovative interventions.

This emergent specialisation is not a move toward isolation, but rather a strategic positioning of systemic agency to initiate change for high value impact returns.

Research Methodologies in the Creative Arts

This module provides an in-depth exploration of research methodologies tailored to the diverse practices, questions, and contexts of the creative arts. Designed for postgraduate students, it introduces the theoretical foundations, methodological frameworks, and ethical considerations that underpin rigorous research in artistic and creative disciplines.

You will be introduced to a wide range of methods and approaches that support inquiry, documentation, and data gathering. Through critical reading, discussion, and hands-on application, you will learn to articulate research questions, frame methodological choices, and produce work that bridges creative practice with scholarly rigour.

Studio 1: Self-positioning

This module turns the lens inward. Before you can examine complex systems and design interventions, you must first understand the assumptions, biases, and perspectives that shape your understanding of the world. Through reflection and self-positioning, you will examine how you engage with social, cultural, and ecological contexts. As the programme's most personal module, it provides the foundation for critical inquiry and responsible intervention.

NMDS1102

Design as Critical Enquiry: From Theory to Praxis

This module positions design not as a delivery mechanism but as a mode of analytic and interventionist enquiry, drawing on critical theory, post-structuralism, and participatory action research to build design experiments that surface hidden tensions, challenge assumptions, and open new ways of understanding systems.

(Elective)

Design Across Scales: Analysing Socio-Ecological Systems

This module examines how designed objects, infrastructures, and systems actively distribute power, structure social norms, and produce conditions of inclusion or exclusion. Students learn to trace political decisions embedded in everyday artefacts across local, institutional, and planetary scales.

Studio 2: Critical Design in Practice

This module transits from studio-based inquiry to situated practice. Working within a site of inquiry, such as a neighbourhood, organisation, or community, you will investigate real-world contexts, analyse complex systems, and develop intervention probes through experimentation. Through iterative testing and engagement with stakeholders, you will evaluate how design interventions operate within and respond to lived conditions.

Critical Readings of Planetary Health in Singapore

This module enhances your ability to critically read sociological and cultural interpretations. Focusing on Singapore as a case study, it explores critical reading through five aspects of daily life — feeding, moving, housing, powering, and caring — by analyzing the stories, policies, and data that influence Singapore. It also examines the connections between people, infrastructures, and ecological systems

(Elective)

Leading Across Boundaries: Culture, Collaboration and Power

This module examines leadership as the practice of advancing impact-led initiatives across organisational, disciplinary, and cultural boundaries shaped by differing values and power structures — using post-mortem analyses of design failures, dialogues with institutional leaders, and real-world immersion studies to understand how alignment is built and how power operates inside institutions.
