ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

BACHELOR OF ARTS (HONOURS) DESIGN PRACTICE
Validated by University of the Arts London (UAL)


Please note: This programme is currently awarded by the University of the Arts London. The final intake for Year 1 entry is August 2026, and for Year 2 entry is August 2027. Prospective students are strongly encouraged to refer to the latest information on our website or contact our admissions office to confirm the current awarding university before submitting an application. Updated programme offering will be made available in due course.

 
  1. Portfolio and Statement of Intent

    All applicants are to demonstrate their potential through the submission of the following:

    1. A Portfolio which consists of 10-15 pieces of the applicant’s best works. These works should demonstrate creativity, passion, and curiosity and are a reflection of the applicant’s view of the world.
    2. A Statement of Intent (250 - 300 words) which communicate the applicant’s purpose in pursing a Design Practice degree course.

  2. Group Interview

    All applicants are to attend a group interview session where they are expected to communicate their motivations in applying for the BA (Hons) Design Practice course, and share their views on specific topics given.

  3. Note: You will be notified of the outcome of your application 4 to 6 weeks after your portfolio interview or audition. Some application outcomes may take longer than expected.

The minimum entry requirement for this programme is either one of the following qualifications:

  • Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Level: Minimum 2 A-Level/ H2 subjects with a pass in General Paper
  • Local Polytechnic Diploma
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma
  • NUS High School Diploma
  • Equivalent of Year 12 qualification

Applicants with a relevant diploma from NAFA, LASALLE or a recognised institution may be considered for direct entry into the second year of the Bachelor programme subject to availability of places.

Conditional Offers for Degree Admission
You may use the latest results available to apply for the programme if you have not received your final examination results. You will be given conditional offers and are still required to submit the following results, as applicable:
  • GCE A-Level results with minimum 2 A-Level/ H2 subjects with a pass in General Paper
  • Polytechnic Diploma certificate and transcript
  • IB Diploma certificate and transcript
  • Final result slip/Proof of completion of Year 12

If you fail to provide documentary evidence of having met the admission requirements, your conditional offer will be withdrawn.

 

Applicants who do not meet these course entry requirements may still be considered in exceptional cases.

The course team will consider each application that demonstrates additional strengths and alternative evidence. This might, for example, be demonstrated by:
  • Related academic or work experience
  • The quality of the personal statement
  • A strong academic or other professional references
  • A combination of these factors
Each application will be considered on its own merit, but we cannot guarantee an offer in each case. In such cases, approval by the University of the Arts London will be required prior to final acceptance into the programme.

All classes are taught in English. The minimum English Language proficiency requirement: IELTS level 6.0 or above, with at least 5.5 in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Click here for other acceptable English language qualifications.

Through an audition that consists of three (3) components – Solo Performance (online submission), Interview, and Workshop (in-person session), we look for:

Audition

1. Solo Performance (online submission)

Applicants are expected to perform a monologue that has been learnt by heart, taken from a published playtext (2-3 minutes), or a dance solo (1.5 minutes) choreographed either by the applicant or by someone else. Through the presentation of a solo performance piece, applicants are assessed on the following:

  • Technical/artistic acumen.
  • Ability to communicate ideas physically and/or verbally.

Monologue (Theatre Specialism)

  • Ability to perform a dramatic text – comprehension, characterisation and creativity.
  • Physical skills - presence on stage, spatial awareness, physical range, movement vocabulary and physical portrayal of character.
  • Vocal skills – projection, clarity, range and tone.

Dance Solo (Dance Specialism)

  • Technique - coordination, control and alignment.
  • Artistry - spatial awareness, musicality, dynamic range and performance quality.
  • Fitness - strength, control, flexibility, coordination, speed, stamina and stretch.

Guidelines for Video Recording and Submission:

  • The recording should be a clear and accurate representation of your performance. Do not edit the audio/visual of your recording.
  • The camera should be stationary for the performance.
  • The recording should show you in full body.
  • The recording should be uploaded here at least 2 days before the in-person Interview and Workshop Audition.
  • Allowed video file types are .mpeg,.mp4,.mov,.m4v,.avi,.wmv,.flv,.asf,.mpg,.mp3 and the maximum file size is 200 MB.

2. Interview (In-Person Session)

Guidelines for Interview and Workshop In-Person Audition:

  • The audition may take up to 2 hours.
  • Wear comfortable clothing that would allow for ease of movement.

Applicants are expected to discuss why they want to study ‘performance making’ during the interview and share any relevant experience. Through the interview, applicants are assessed on the following:

  • Passion for the performing arts.
  • Commitment and motivation to strive for excellence in the programme.
  • Aptitude for self-directed learning and critical evaluation of work.

3. Workshop (In-Person Session)

Applicants are expected to participate fully in the interactive workshop. Through the workshop, applicants are assessed on the following:

  • Ability to communicate ideas physically and/or verbally.
  • Aptitude for creative problem solving.
  • Openness and willingness to collaborate creatively and respectfully with others.
  • Ability to create, develop and respond to new ideas and to work with new creative forms.
  • Openness and responsiveness to different cultural perspectives.

SCHOLARSHIPS, MERIT AWARDS & BURSARIES

In recognition of exceptional academic achievement, artistic talent, and leadership potential, NAFA offers a wide range of scholarships, merit awards, and bursaries to both new and current students. These awards are designed to support students who demonstrate excellence in the arts and creative industries, and who show promise in contributing meaningfully to the cultural landscape.

NAFA’s scholarships are made possible through institutional and donor support, and are available across Diploma, Bachelor’s, and Master’s degree programmes. Application periods vary depending on the level of study and are announced on the official NAFA website. Students are encouraged to refer to the relevant scholarship pages for detailed timelines and eligibility criteria.

In addition to NAFA’s in-house awards, students may also apply for externally sponsored scholarships. Enquiries and applications for these should be directed to the respective sponsoring organisations. Please note that miscellaneous fees are not covered by scholarships, bursaries, or government subsidies such as the Mendaki Tertiary Tuition Fee Subsidy (TTFS).

FAQ - University of the Arts Singapore

The University of the Arts Singapore (UAS) is Singapore's first arts university nurturing a new generation of forward-looking artists, designers, educators, researchers, arts leaders and changemakers. UAS is founded on an alliance of Singapore's leading arts institutions, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and LASALLE College of the Arts. It is supported by the government, which will continue to provide funding for subsidised Diploma and BA (Hons) students and UAS will validate, confer and award degrees in respect to the programmes offered by NAFA, UAS. It will also support both arts institutions in the provision of a shared UAS experience which includes a common curriculum. All academic programmes will continue to be developed, designed and delivered by NAFA, UAS at its campuses.

All academic lessons and learning will continue to be delivered at NAFA, UAS existing campuses. Meanwhile, UAS will offer common curriculum modules from the National Design Centre which is in close proximity to NAFA, UAS.

You do not need prior formal training, but you will need to produce a portfolio showing your interest and self-exploration into art and design.

The Bachelor of Education in Instrumental and Vocal Teaching has a prerequisite of a Diploma in Music or Music Teaching from NAFA, UAS or other institutions offering full-time formal training in music.
You may receive advanced standing or Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) if the qualification you have is recognised by NAFA, UAS, subjected to portfolio/audition assessment and interview. In some instances, students have enrolled directly into the second year of the Bachelor’s Degree (Hons) programme.

We seek your understanding that we may take longer to respond if we had not previously encountered your qualification and need to do deeper research before reaching a decision.

We will consider each appeal on a case-by-case basis.

Do note that if your appeal is accepted, it does not mean that your application will also be successful. Your application will still be assessed on the same platform and requirement as all other applicants.
Yes, you may apply before meeting the English proficiency requirement.

We will assess your application based on your portfolio submission/interview/audition and offer you admission conditional on your meeting of the English proficiency requirement by a specific deadline. If you do not meet the admission condition by the deadline, we will rescind our offer.
There are no part-time Degree programmes available. If you are interested in part-time Certificate programmes, you may email the Centre for Lifelong Education at [email protected] for more information.

Degree programmes conferred by the University of the Arts London (UAL) and the University of the Arts Singapore (UAS) are 3-year, full-time programmes. Applicants with a relevant diploma from NAFA, UAS, LASALLE or a recognised institution may be considered for direct entry into the second year of the Bachelor programme subject to portfolio review, interview and programme capacity.

The Bachelor of Education (Hons) in Instrumental & Vocal Teaching awarded by the Royal College of Music (RCM) is a 2-year, full-time programme for applicants with relevant diploma qualifications.

The Bachelor of Music (Hons), jointly awarded by the RCM and NAFA, UAS is a 4-year full-time programme.
Application results will be sent via email within 4–6 weeks after Audition / Portfolio Interview.

You may also check on the status of the application by logging into the application portal within 4–6 weeks after Audition / Portfolio Interview.

Applications from Singaporeans to the BA (Hons) Design Practice will be assessed collectively and outcomes will be announced progressively from February to mid-April.

Some application outcomes may take longer than expected. We seek your understanding that we are unable to expedite any specific application as we are already working to provide your application outcome as soon as possible, while ensuring that every application is reviewed carefully and holistically.
A student typically has about 20 hours of lessons per week. A performing arts student is often expected to attend additional hours of rehearsals after lessons as well. Classes are usually scheduled between Mondays and Fridays, 9.00am to 6.00pm; evening or Saturday classes may occasionally be scheduled for some programmes.

Students may also have to remain on campus after classes for assignments, projects or rehearsals.
Depending on your year of enrolment, you will be conferred a degree by the University of the Arts Singapore or our partner universities, University of the Arts London or Royal College of Music, London, upon successful completion of the degree programme.
Your eligibility for the Tuition Grant depends on factors such as your prior highest qualification and nationality. Please refer here for more information on the tuition grant eligibility. For further clarifications, please contact the Student Admissions Office.
Tuition grants are not available for international students for the publicly funded degree programmes. However, NAFA, UAS will provide a small number of scholarship and bursary awards for outstanding applicants each year.
Diploma graduates who are Tuition Grant recipients may apply for deferment of the service obligation for further studies here. Application for deferment is subject to MOE’s approval on a case-by-case basis. You will be required to provide a Banker’s Guarantee.
You may still enrol in NAFA, UAS and pay the full tuition fees to reserve a place in the programme that you are accepted to. If you are successful in your application to the other institution, you may withdraw from NAFA, UAS. By doing so, you can avoid the possibility of ending up with no programme to study, should your application to other institutions be unsuccessful.

Yes, male students currently serving National Service, are welcome to apply. We will reserve a place for male students who accepted our offers, for the immediate intake year after your ORD.

We will send you more information in January of your intake year to follow-up with your admission.

Note: Reservation of places for NSmen is not applicable for Bachelor of Music (Hons) and Bachelor of Education (Hons) in Instrumental & Vocal Teaching. Please apply for the immediate intake year after your ORD.
The deferment letter will only be given to students who have made the minimum required payment of their tuition fees. Please contact your programme manager via email for this request. You may reach them by replying to the email informing you of your admission. You will need to submit your ICT notification letter to them.

If your programme has commenced, please contact the Office of Student Services at [email protected] for the deferment letter.
We may offer you admission to Year 2 if you have previously pursued related studies and demonstrated that you are well-placed to join Year 2 of the programme, subject to vacancies and admission requirements of each programme.
Application for deferment will only be considered for reasons due to extenuating circumstances such as prolonged health problems. You will have to submit a completed ‘Request for Deferment’ form with relevant supporting documents to the Office of Student Services. As the application for deferment is subject to approval by the relevant Dean of Faculty, you must continue to attend classes until the outcome of your application is known.
Programme Transfer is not applicable to degree programmes, before and after programme commencement.

If the application window is still open for your preferred programme, you will need to submit a new application for your preferred programme.

If the application window has closed, you will need to apply for the next intake in the next application window.
You will have to apply separately to Lasalle, UAS as a new applicant. Please contact Lasalle, UAS directly for your request.
There is no direct transfer arrangement with other Universities. If you wish to pursue your education at another University, please reach out directly to your preferred University to understand their admission process and requirements.
While it is unlikely that your appeal will change our decision since every application has been reviewed comprehensively, you may contact your programme manager via email for this request. You may reach them by replying to the email informing you of your application outcome.

NAFA, UAS plays a pivotal role in nurturing Singapore’s creative and artistic talent, as recognised by the Singapore Government. The Ministry of Education supports NAFA, UAS through financial grants, enabling access to quality arts education. Under the Ministry’s Tuition Grant Scheme, subsidised fees for Bachelor’s degree programmes are available to Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents.

Should the student be unable to resolve any dispute and/or grievance with their respective department, they may surface the issue to the Office of Student Services.

If the student is not satisfied with the explanation or solution offered by the Office of Student Services, the student may lodge an appeal to the Vice-President, Provost, or President of NAFA, UAS.

In the event the student is still not satisfied with the explanation or recommendation offered by NAFA, UAS, he/she may seek redress via SSG Mediation-Arbitration Scheme, Small Claims Tribunals or his/her own legal counsel.
