[ji.wa], meaning soul in both Indonesian and Malay, marks the debut solo exhibition of emerging Singaporean multidisciplinary artist Fitri Ya'akob. Through video, sculpture and photography that move from the indigenous sea people (Orang Laut) and fishing villages to mangroves, coral reefs and plastic debris, the works bear witness to the lives lived and living, and hold in tension, the contradictions that define the island’s existence: the beauty and the neglect, the rooted and the disappearing, the intimacy of a place unmoored.
