Biography

Ethel has been in the teaching profession for 25 years. She has taught critical thinking, business communication, academic writing and multiculturalism at National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, National Institute of Education and Singapore Management University.

Ethel has always maintained an interest in the arts. For her Master's dissertation, she researched and wrote on the films of the auteur director, Wong Kar-Wai. She plays an active role in the development of the arts in Singapore, having served as Vice Chairperson and member of Media Development Authority’s Consultative Panels for Publications and Films. In this role, she played a part in collating feedback on the regulation of media content. Ethel has contributed to the research of the Visual and Performing Arts Department of National Institute of Education, to help develop the teaching of the arts in local schools. She has also moderated several panel discussions at the Singapore Writers Festival.

Ethel has always undertaken an active interest participating in initiatives supporting Singapore’s various sectors. She was part of the Citizens’ Workgroup for Singapore Citizenship Journey, commissioned by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY), which presented a report to the Minister of MCCY. She is also part of the Programmes Evaluation Panel of the Speak Good English Movement.
