Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), University of the Arts Singapore (UAS) unveils Spirited Wild, by Cultural Medallion recipient and illustrious NAFA alumnus Tay Chee Toh. Marking his 11th solo show, Tay Chee Toh unveils nearly 20 bold new Chinese ink works painted this year, since 2019. Opening from 3 to 16 September 2025 at The Ngee Ann Kongsi Galleries 1 & 2, the exhibition captures the spirit and vitality of majestic equines through Tay’s bold and unconventional vision.
Born in Malaysia in 1941, Tay is recognised as a modern artist who played a role in developing modern art in Singapore. A NAFA graduate specialising in Western Painting and a co-founder of the Modern Art Society, Tay is widely recognised for his multidisciplinary approach spanning painting, printmaking, sculpture, and installation. His latest works are inspired by his travels and insights across Southeast Asia, drawing decades of experimentation that challenge and redefine the traditions of Chinese ink.
“As the horse is widely regarded as a symbol of perseverance, ambition, and determination, I hope it serves as an inspiration for young people to pursue their aspirations with dedication and purpose,” said Tay Chee Toh, Cultural Medallion recipient and NAFA alumnus.
Tay employs energetic brushstrokes, stylised forms, and distinctive seals to reinterpret the classic horse motif. An illustrious alumnus, Tay was awarded the Cultural Medallion and First Prize at the UOB Painting of the Year, both in 1985.
