2013 , Young Artist Award
Born in Singapore in 1979, Muhammad Zaki Razak was a Visual Communications graduate from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 2000. He then attained his Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours (Painting and Drawing) from the University of Huddersfield, UK in 2007 and his Master of Fine Arts from the Open University, UK in 2011. He was accepted for residencies including The Substation’s Associate Artist Research Programme in Singapore from 2012 - 2014 and the Land Foundation Artist Residency in Chiang Mai, Thailand in 2006. A 2013 Young Artist Award recipient, he was awarded the President’s Young Talents Award in the same year, for his performance-installation piece, Revisiting Art: The Ten Year Series at the Singapore Art Museum. His artistic practice includes street art, graphic design, performance art, writing, curating, installation art and education. Although he is deeply inspired and encouraged by the talent and practices of Shahril Supangat and Khairuddin Hori, he constantly seeks creative ways in organising platforms for the self or community/society. History, spirituality and the everyday life are common underpinnings in his artistic creations. These visions and motivations in turn engender a new hybrid practice that employs a playful, participatory approach to art, for audiences and artists alike.
