Western abstract painting is central to the development of art in the 20th century. By the 21st century, abstract painting opened endless possibilities. The journey from representation to abstraction is based on connecting and presenting your inner world of memory, feeling and imagination to the world. Learners will learn how to re-invent qualities of surface, texture, sensation, movement, and through processing the materials, processes and ideas. To complement their course learning, there will be references to contemporary and historical examples of abstract art and artists.

Terms and Conditions

Learners will be presented with a digital certificate upon successful completion of the course.

Module 1 - Structures (8 sessions x 3 hours)

This module equips learners with the ability to appraise distinct works produced by contemporary artists. Learners will examine how lines, structures and rhythm communicate these pieces. This module broadens ideas around representation and abstraction through an exploration of the historical context of art; from Lascaux cave paintings to the present day.

Module 2 - Unity (8 sessions x 3 hours)

This module equips learners with the ability to develop their vision of being an abstract painter. Learners will examine how correlation, balance and organisation of elements of an artwork can achieve unity. The module focuses on the abstract representation of applying one’s perception, temperament and aesthetical beauty to artwork. In addition to learning about the changing roles of abstraction in contemporary practice, its processes and its relationship to other forms of art; learners will also explore colour mixing, values and emotion.

Applicants must be 17 years old and above.

Course Prerequisite

For learners who have successfully completed Certificate in Western Abstract Painting (Intermediate).

National Silver Academy
Applicable to Singaporean seniors aged 50 and above who will receive a subsidy of 50% off the course fee (capped at $500 per course). Please take note that the subsidy will only apply to the course fee and will not cover GST.

SkillsFuture Credit
All Singaporeans aged 25 and above can use their $500 SkillsFuture Credit from the government to pay for a wide range of approved skills-related courses. Visit the SkillsFuture Credit website (www.skillsfuture.sg/credit) to choose from the courses available on the Training Exchange course directory.

Refund of Fees

Withdrawal before the course commencement date Course fee^ will be refunded after deduction of S$107.00 as administrative charges.
Withdrawal on or after course commencement date
No refund will be given.
^Application fees and miscellaneous fees are non-refundable.

Cancellation/ Postponement

  • NAFA reserves the right to cancel or postpone any course without prior notice.
    In the event that the class is unable to proceed due to unforeseen circumstances, NAFA will process a full refund of the course fees.

Withdrawal/ Deferment/ Transfer

  • Withdrawal or deferment requests should be made in writing with supporting relevant documents (if any) to Centre for Lifelong Education. Request for deferment is subject to approval.
  • No deferment is allowed once the course has commenced.
  • No transfer of course upon application.

Replacement of Classes

  • There is strictly no replacement lesson should the participant absent himself/herself from the course.

NAFA Centre for Lifelong Education reserves the right to reject any application under any circumstance. If we reject your application, we will refund any amount that has been paid in relation to the application that is rejected or voided without interest.
