Certificate in Western Abstract Painting (Advanced)

Western abstract painting is central to the development of art in the 20th century. By the 21st century, abstract painting opened endless possibilities. The journey from representation to abstraction is based on connecting and presenting your inner world of memory, feeling and imagination to the world. Learners will learn how to re-invent qualities of surface, texture, sensation, movement, and through processing the materials, processes and ideas. There will be references to contemporary and historical examples of abstract art and artists to complement course learning.

Course Prerequisite
For learners who have successfully completed Certificate in Western Abstract Painting (Intermediate).

This course is offered by invitation only. New applicants may contact CLE at [email protected] to apply for exemption. The cost of each exemption application is S$109 (non-refundable).

Module 1 - Structures
(8 sessions x 3 hours)
This module equips learners with the ability to appraise distinct works produced by contemporary artists. Learners will examine how lines, structures and rhythm communicate these pieces. This module broadens ideas around representation and abstraction through an exploration of art's historical context, from Lascaux cave paintings to the present day.

Module Content:
  • Introduction from Abstract to Abstraction
  • Materials and Techniques
  • Developing a Grid System

Module 2 - Unity
(8 sessions x 3 hours)

The module focuses on the abstract representation of applying ' 'one's perception, temperament and aesthetical beauty to artwork. In addition to learning about the changing roles of abstraction in contemporary practice, its processes and its relationship to other forms of art, learners will also explore colour mixing, values and emotion.
