Certificate in Fashion Design

This course provides beginners with knowledge and understanding of the basics of fashion design. Learners will be guided on how to conduct research and to conceptualise a design theme. Areas of study include research methodologies, seasonal trends and target markets, design development and fashion figure drawing. At the end of this course, learners will be able to produce a simple fashion collection in 2D format using digital imaging software.

Module 1 - Fashion Design Essentials
(8 sessions x 3 hours)

This module introduces the basics of fashion design. Learners will gain knowledge and inspiration through fashion history, shapes and silhouettes, colour and trend inquiries. They will also learn practical skills in fashion figure drawing.

Module Content:
  • Overview of Fashion Industries
  • Conduct primary and secondary research
  • Produce various types of presentation boards
  • Design garments according to a theme
  • Produce fashion illustration and technical Flats drawing with accurate proportion
  • Produce a portfolio ready for presentation

Module 2 - Digital Designing
(8 sessions x 3 hours)

This module aims to equip learners with the knowledge and skills to create professional presentation boards using digital imaging software. Through weekly exercises, learners will be able to design digital fabric swatches in various motifs, prints and textures. They will then transfer these swatches onto the outfits that are relevant to their design theme.

Module Content:
  1. Adobe Photoshop
    • Starting with Creative Cloud 2017/2018 Photoshop
    • Setting up, managing workspace, image size and resolution, cropping image and perspective cropping
    • Basic Colour Correction
    • Making Selections and Compositing images
    • Healing Image

  2. Adobe Illustrator
    • Starting with Creative Cloud 2017/2018 Illustrator
    • Introduction to Key Concepts and Getting to Know the Work Area
    • Navigating Illustrator
      • Drawing and Editing Paths
      • Working with Type
      • Applying appearances and effects
      • Working with Images path finder / shape builder
      • Working with Pen Tools

Hanna Lai

For slightly over a decade, Hanna Lai has toggled her attention between fashion design, graphic design, and arts education. She specialises in design and production for sportswear, menswear and womenswear. Upon completing her Bachelor studies with First Class Honours, she embarked on her career in the fashion industry as a Senior Fashion Designer, Consultant, Arts Educator and Programme Leader for several Fashion programmes.

During her studies, she was selected to showcase her graduate collection at the Graduates Fashion Week in London, alongside the top United Kingdom and international universities.

While attaining her degree, Hanna was also awarded the grand prize in the Nefful Fashion Discovery 2018 competition, Best Graduate Award and the prestigious Peru Embassy Award - which recognises well-rounded academic achievers. Her works have been chosen to be showcased at the India-ASEAN Weaving Textiles Relations and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) Best of Best Show 2018: Creative Differences exhibition.

We are open from Monday to Friday (excluding Public Holidays).
