Basic Woodblock Printing

(4 sessions X 3 hours)

This course aims to introduce the basics of woodblock printing, a form of relief printing popular in Japan from the 17^th century. Learners will be taught the step-by-step techniques of creating their woodblock prints, from designing the illustration and carving the woodblock to making a basic two-colour print. This course is recommended for freelancers, designers, illustrators, hobbyists or anyone who wish to learn the technique of creating visually appealing artworks or illustrations with a hand-made aesthetic for various applications, e.g. marketing collaterals, merchandise, etc.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this module, learners will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of woodblock printing.
2. Design an image suitable for printing.
3. Prepare the woodblock for carving.
4. Carve the woodblock.
5. Make a two-colour woodblock print.
