Basic Woodblock Printing

(4 sessions X 3 hours)

This course aims to introduce the basics of woodblock printing, a form of relief printing popular in Japan from the 17th century. Learners will be taught the step-by-step techniques of creating their woodblock prints, from designing the illustration and carving the woodblock to making a basic two-colour print. This course is recommended for freelancers, designers, illustrators, hobbyists or anyone who wish to learn the technique of creating visually appealing artworks or illustrations with a hand-made aesthetic for various applications, e.g. marketing collaterals, merchandise, etc.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this module, learners will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of woodblock printing.
  2. Design an image suitable for printing.
  3. Prepare the woodblock for carving.
  4. Carve the woodblock.
  5. Make a two-colour woodblock print.

A digital certificate will be issued upon successful course completion, which requires a minimum attendance rate of 75%.

Please note that no replacement classes are offered for missed lessons.

Our Trainers

 

Joseph Chiang

Joseph Chiang is an artist, printmaker and cartoonist. He is the founder of Monster Gallery, a creative print studio, and the Young Printmakers League, a mentorship programme supported by Noise Singapore. He was commissioned by the National Arts Council to organise the Contemporary Printmaking Festival as part of Singapore Art Week 2017. He has exhibited in Singapore and internationally. He was invited to exhibit his works at the 10th World Triennial of Original Prints and Engravings in Chamalières (France, 2017). His latest work Chronicles of a Circuit Breaker is a graphic novel depicting his life during the Circuit Breaker in Singapore in 2020.
