Introduction

The Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM) is situated in the capital of China, Beijing. Established in 1949, it is an institution dedicated to nurturing world-class professionals in music. In 1990, NAFA signed an official contract to host the Chinese Instruments Graded Examinations in partnership with CCOM. The first Graded Examinations were held in 1991, and continued on an annual basis in November. The NAFA-CCOM Graded Examinations place strong emphasis on methodical music pedagogy and solid foundational musical skills. The Examination Committee strives to maintain the highest examination standards and offer candidates with valuable suggestions and performance advice for further musical development.

Due to the current COVID-19 situation, all registration and payments will be done online.

Under the Advisory Guidelines on the PDPA for NRIC and Other National Identification Numbers which took effect on 1 September 2019, there will be no Group Registration as of 2020.

Only Percussion examinations will be done live at NAFA Campus 3. Please email [email protected] by 9 November 2020 to request for a live examination.

All other examinations are to be recorded and submitted online. Please see 2020 CCOM Graded Exam Rules and Regulations for video recording guidelines.

As of 2018, NAFA will not be providing big instruments at the examination venues, namely the Guzheng and Yangqin. Only the Snare Drum will be provided for Percussion examinations.

As of 2019, candidates are not allowed to choose their preferred date and time for the examination.

Registration for the NAFA-CCOM Chinese Instruments Graded Examinations is CLOSED.

Upon validating the withdrawal reasons and supporting documents, a refund of up to 50% of the examination fee will be made by cheque to the candidate. All withdrawal requests are to be submitted in writing by 9 November 2020.

Candidates who submit the withdrawal requests after 9 November 2020 will not be eligible for refund of the examination fee.
Examination Video Submission Period 23 Nov 2020, 09:00 - 6 Dec 2020, 23:59 Details on Video Submission will be updated soon.

Collection of Results All certificates and result slips will be mailed to candidates No need for collection at NAFA in person




  • Examinable Instruments
    The Graded Examinations will comprise 10 main instruments, namely Erhu, Pipa, Guzheng, Dizi, Yangqin, Suona, Ruan, Sheng, Liuqin and Percussion.

  • Examination Grades
    The Graded Examinations consist of Grades 1 to 9 and Diploma * (a total of 10 grades).

    *There is no Diploma Grade examination for Percussion.

    Diploma Grade
    Candidates registering for the Diploma examination are required to attach a photocopy of their Grade 9 certificate jointly issued by NAFA and CCOM for verification.

    Candidates who attained a DISTINCTION for the Diploma Grade may be considered for exemption from the music audition when applying for admission to the NAFA School of Music’s Chinese Instrumental Studies.

  • Examination Requirements
    The examination requires candidates to perform 3 music pieces below from memory* for Grade 1 to Diploma level. There will be NO aural or sight-reading tests.

    1) 1 Technical Study Music Piece
    2) 2 Solo Music Pieces

    Note: All pieces are to be chosen from the official CCOM Examination Syllabus (Overseas Version). Click here for information.

    *Candidates below the age of 18 are required to perform pieces from memory for 1 technical study piece and 2 solo pieces.

    Candidates aged 18 and above can choose to perform the above repertoire with or without scores during the examination.

All examination certificates and result slips will be mailed to candidates. No personal collection is required at NAFA.

Review of Results/Re-examination
There will be NO review of results and NO re-examination. The examiners’ decision is final.
