Introduction

The Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM) is situated in the capital of China, Beijing. Established in 1949, it is an institution dedicated to nurturing world-class professionals in music. In 1990, NAFA signed the official contract to host the Chinese Instruments Graded Examinations in partnership with CCOM. The first Graded Examinations were held in 1991, and continued on an annual basis in November. The NAFA-CCOM Graded Examinations place strong emphasis on methodical music pedagogy and solid foundational musical skills. The Examination Committee strives to maintain the highest examination standards and offer candidates with valuable suggestions and performance advice for further musical development.

New instrument added to NAFA Chinese Instruments Graded Examinations: Liu Qin and Percussion

As of 2018, NAFA will not be providing big instruments, namely the Guzheng and Yangqin, at the examination venues. Only the Snare Drum will be provided for the Percussion examination. For all other instruments, candidates are required to bring along their personal instruments.
*1 set of Guzheng and Yangqin stands will be provided in both the holding area and examination room.

Registration for the NAFA-CCOM Chinese Instruments Graded Examinations will take place from 14 August 2018, 10am to 14 September 2018, 5pm. Late registration will strictly not be accepted after the stated closing date.

  • Examinable Instruments
    With effect from 2017, the Graded Examinations will comprise 10 main instruments, namely Erhu, Pipa, Guzheng, Dizi, Yangqin, Suona, Ruan, Sheng, Liuqin and Percussion.

  • Examination Grades
    The Graded Examinations consist of Grades 1 to 9 and Diploma * (a total of 10 grades).

    *There is no Diploma Grade examination for Percussion.

    Diploma Grade
    Candidates registering for the Diploma examination are required to attach a photocopy of their Grade 9 certificate jointly issued by NAFA and CCOM for verification.

    Candidates who attained a DISTINCTION for the Diploma Grade may be considered for exemption from the music audition when applying for admission to the NAFA School of Music’s Chinese Instrumental Studies.

  • Examination Requirements
    The examination requires candidates to perform 3 music pieces below from memory* for Grade 1 to Diploma level. There will be NO aural or sight-reading tests.

    1) 1 Technical Study Music Piece
    2) 2 Solo Music Pieces

    Note: All pieces are to be chosen from the official CCOM Examination Syllabus (Overseas Version). Click here for information.

    *Candidates below the age of 18 are required to perform pieces from memory for 1 technical study piece and 2 solo pieces.

    Candidates aged 18 and above can choose to perform the above repertoire with or without scores during the examination.

  • Admission Slip (by post)
    An Admission Slip stating the date, time, location and examination venue will be mailed out to the candidate by end October 2018.
    Requests on changes to the examination dates and arrangements are to be submitted by EMAIL ONLY to [email protected] latest by 12 November 2018.

  • Withdrawal Policy
    Once registered, candidates who request to withdraw from the graded examination are to send an EMAIL to [email protected], indicating Name of Candidate, Instrument and Grade, Reason for Absenteeism, and supporting documents (Medical Certificate issued by a General Practitioner has to be submitted by 10 Dec 2018).

    Upon validating the withdrawal reasons and supporting documents, a refund of up to 50% of the examination fee will be made by cheque to the candidate. All withdrawal requests are to be submitted in writing by 12 November 2018.

    Candidates who submit the withdrawal requests after 12 November 2018 will not be eligible for refund of the examination fee.

  • Examination Date Requests
    Please indicate the requested dates and valid reason(s), in your online application. Please email supporting documents to [email protected] for us to facilitate your request. All dates are subject to visiting examiners’ schedules.

  • Instructor/School/ Music School Name on certificate
    The examination certificate will list the name of the instructor OR the name of the school as provided during registration.

Please note that there will be no disclosure of examination results by phone or by email.

All examination certificates and result slips will be mailed to candidates this year. No personal collection is required at NAFA.

Review of Results/Re-examination
There will be NO review of results and NO re-examination. The examiners’ decision is final.
