A qualified and experienced drama educator, Oniatta Effendi has spent over 20 years in the classroom. She has taught English, Literature and Drama in secondary schools for 7 years. Oniatta was a lecturer in the Performing Arts Department at LASALLE College of the Arts for 7 years, alongside writing drama curricula and facilitating drama programmes in secondary schools. She also spent the last 5 years lecturing at Singapore Polytechnic, where she was part of the Diploma in Applied Drama and Psychology team. In addition to her teaching experience, she also spent one and a half years at the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice as a research assistant, researching on process drama and its impact on oral communication.
Oniatta was mentored by theatre doyen and Cultural Medallion recipient, the late Kuo Pao Kun. She was nominated in the Best Actress category at the Life! Theatre Awards 2012 for a role in The Gunpowder Trail staged in August 2011. Oniatta is also a familiar face on Mediacorp’s Suria and has presented in a few programmes, including an award-winning children’s TV programme (Krayon) for 4 consecutive seasons and other educational programmes.
Oniatta is a strong advocate of the arts and is an active applied drama practitioner. She believes in the transformative nature of drama, especially with vulnerable communities. She has worked with ex-offenders with addiction issues in a halfway house, youth offenders in correctional facilities, youths in welfare homes as well as youths with special needs.
