Biography

Jessica Chuan is a recipient of Yeohlee fellowship program, during which she learned from Yeohlee, a luxury designer in New York who advocates locally made, zero waste and sustainable practices.  The founder of Rehyphen®, she pioneered an up-cycling initiative whereby she and her team collected discarded cassette tapes as an effort to reduce and eliminate e-waste, while giving the product a new life. The tapes were weaved into a tapestry called MusicCloth®.  Her MusicCloth® garnered high votes from Material ConneXion's jury and researcher in UPenn, who showed a lot of interest in its sustainability story. Her material has been included in Red Dot 21 for excellent 21st century design.

Jessica has exhibited her projects at events such as NYC x Design, Bangkok Biennale, Singapore and Shanghai Design Week, and in cities around the world including Nanjing, Taipei, Malaysia, Lisbon, Berlin and Amsterdam.

In addition, Jessica has also led and inspired local community and travellers to create a positive impact via her up-cycling workshop “Ready, Cassette, Go !” with several government organisations and Airbnb Experience team. Malaysia’s media, New Straits Times described her workshop as a truly unique experience.
