Biography

Gao Jian was born in Beijing, China into a family of musicians. He started studying the French Horn with his father and has been performing since he was 13. Between 1981 and 1983, he received two of the highest distinctions in the National Horn Competition and entered the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. He visited Europe several times with the Chinese Youth Symphony Orchestra as Principal of the horn section, and received excellent reviews.

Gao Jian joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) in 1988, touring and performing with the orchestra around Asia, Europe, America and North Africa. Gao Jian has performed as a guest musician with major Asian orchestras, such as the Malaysia Philharmonic Orchestra, Macau Symphony Orchestra, Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra, China Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the China NCPA Orchestra. He is currently the Associate-principal of the horn section in the SSO.

Actively teaching, Gao Jian has been a music tutor with Raffles Girl’s School, Nanyang Girl’s High school, National University of Singapore’s Winds Symphony and Symphony Orchestra, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore’s Winds Symphony, Singapore Management University’s Winds Symphony, as well as Singapore Youth Symphony Orchestra for over 15 years.
