On 10 May 2023, Minister for Education, Mr Chan Chun Sing, launched the logo of the University of the Arts Singapore (UAS), Singapore’s first arts university, at the inaugural Arts Symposium held at The Singapore Airlines Theatre at LASALLE College of the Arts. The Symposium was attended by about 420 guests, including educators, artists, industry practitioners and partners, as well as colleagues from UAS, NAFA and LASALLE.

The logo launch moment at the ceremony was accompanied by a collaborative faculty-student performance segment by both NAFA and LASALLE, titled Ladrang Semula, a contemporary work collectively created with Southeast Asian motifs. Led by our Programme Leader at the Office of Academic Affairs Alicia de Silva, NAFA’s gamelan ensemble presented enchanting soundtracks, while LASALLE’s design team showcased a dynamic graphic animation of the new UAS logo unveiling on screen. The music was structured in three parts, starting gently and eventually growing with an energetic crescendo, culminating in a reprise as a tribute to our roots and heritage.

Additionally, the University took the opportunity to pay tribute to Mr Lim Hak Tai, our Founding Principal and Brother Joseph McNally (the founder of LASALLE), as well as show their appreciation and recognition for the contributions of 10 senior arts educators who have nurtured generations of artists, practitioners, and researchers. These art educators were selected for their diversity of art forms, impact and mentorship, contributions, length of service and scholarship. We are proud that our Cultural Medallion alumni Han Sai Por and Wee Beng Chong, as well as Cultural Medallion faculty member Lim Yau, were highlighted and recognised at the Symposium.

The success of today’s event presents a positive and exciting start to the UAS.  It also marks a significant leap forward for our academy.
