Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), University of the Arts Singapore (UAS), today unveiled a series of six public art benches co-created by its alumni artists as part of a collaboration with Central Singapore Community Development Council (CDC) under the GiraffeSG@Central initiative.

Launched at NAFA’s Bencoolen Street campus, the benches transform everyday seating into sculptural works that invite reflection on care, inclusion and collective responsibility. Created by NAFA alumni artists across disciplines, including award-winning sculptor Yeo Chee Kiong and batik maestro Kamal Dollah, alongside invited collaborator Johnny Lau (creator of the comic series Mr Kiasu), the works reflect how artistic practice can engage communities beyond traditional exhibition spaces.

The launch was graced by Mayor of Central Singapore District Ms Denise Phua, and marks the first-ever GiraffeSG@Central public art installation.

“At NAFA, art education extends beyond the studio and classroom into the shared public spaces of our community. Through this collaboration with Central Singapore CDC, our alumni artists have translated values of care, inclusion and responsibility into meaningful works of art. We hope everyone can experience and enjoy them in their everyday lives,” said Mrs Tan-Soh Wai Lan, President, NAFA.

The displayed benches will be installed at partner locations across the island, including Suntec City, Gardens by the Bay and One Holland Village, extending their reach to diverse communities where they live, work and play.

The project also serves as a platform for intergenerational and inclusive collaboration, with several benches co-created with children and community participants, reflecting NAFA’s commitment to socially engaged art and practice-based learning.

This collaboration reflects NAFA’s role as a vibrant campus that brings art, education and community together, enriching society through meaningful creative expression.
