Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Spatial Design

Introduction

This is a one-year top-up course for diploma graduates offered in collaboration with University of Central Lancashire, UK.

BA (Hons) Spatial Design is a programme orientated towards professionals and built upon diploma studies in interior, exhibition, hospitality and landscape design. The course is designed to develop your understanding for theoretical, technical, cultural and contextual aspects of design practice in the multidisciplinary area of spatial design.

It serves as a platform for developing your creative potential, design ingenuity, entrepreneurial skills as well as incubating leadership in the design industries.

  • Produce strong design concept proposals with reference to contextual issues, specific reasoning, evaluation and creativity/interpretation
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between designers and other professionals and appreciate the various roles undertaken by a professional designer

This module allows you to formulate a working brief for the subsequent Major design Studio, as well as investigate a range of issues related to your topic of interest. Issues must be carefully researched and substantiated by case studies, interviews and surveys.

IN3202 Design Studio 1 40

Learn to design proposals that reflect your research, investigation and creative abilities. Develop your understanding of a range of appropriate techniques and methods related to the design process- from concept to implementation.

IN3203 Project Management and Entrepreneurship 2 20

This module includes theoretical and practical studies that provide an overview of the roles played by a professional designer, as an independent practitioner or as member of a team. Aspects of entrepreneurship, business practice, legal responsibilities, and marketing will be discussed.

IN3204 Major Design Studio 2 40

Expand your expertise on design spaces, and learn how to satisfy aesthetic, environmental and functional requirements. A high standard of design resolution is expected throughout this module.

Requirements

  1. A graduate of NAFA’s Diploma in Design or its equivalent
  2. Submission of a portfolio of appropriately creative and original work as evidence of the student’s ability
  3. Satisfactory completion of a portfolio interview
  4. Applicants should be 19 years of age or above in the year of admission of the degree course
  5. Minimum entry requirement for English language proficiency is IELTS Band 6 or equivalent*

*Please note that the English requirement needs to be fulfilled by non-NAFA international students. There will be a waiver for NAFA students.

Course fees indicated here apply to top-up degree courses in the academic year of 2018, with studies commencing on 30 July 2018. All annual fees are based on 120 credits per year, for all top-up Degree Courses and are inclusive of 7% GST.

NAFA has put in place the Fee Protection Scheme (FPS) by way of insurance facility to protect the fees of students paid to NAFA. The FPS covers the Tuition Fee which is paid by students in every semester. Students will receive a copy of the certificate of insurance from our appointed FPS provider by way of email. The insured period will commence from the fee payment date or the date when the money is credited to NAFA’s Bank account (via Telegraphic Transfer). For more details about FPS, please check the Council of Private Education website at www.cpe.gov.sg.

The Bachelor of Music with Honours course funded by Singapore Ministry of Education (MOE) is exempted from Fee Protection Scheme.

NAFA students taking full-time programs are covered by a medical insurance scheme that provides 24-hour annual coverage of up to S$20,000 per student for hospitalisation and medical treatments in government and restructured hospitals in Singapore and overseas (if student is involved in school-related activities), throughout the course duration.

Singapore Citizens, Permanent Residents or non-Student’s Pass international students who are protected by his/ her own insurance coverage in Singapore can opt-out from the scheme arranged by the Academy if the preceding condition holds. Student’s Pass holders are not allowed to opt-out of the insurance scheme. Students who wish to opt-out from the medical insurance scheme, must submit copy of their medical insurance policy together with their Student Contract.

Application period for AY2018/2019 intake opens 3 January and ends 31 March 2018.

  1. Apply online
  2. Upon completion of the online application, please print a copy of the Application Acknowledgment page.
  3. Submit all required documents listed below to the Student Admissions Office, NAFA Campus 1, for our verification within five working days of your online application:
    1. Academic certificate and transcript (All Diploma transcripts and graduation certificate)
    2. For NAFA current Year 3 applicants, please provide all transcripts from Year 1 to Year 3 semester 1 and input your Year 3 semester 1 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in the online application system
    3. English qualification (GCE ‘A’ level/GCE ‘O’ level/TOEFL/TOEFL iBT/IELTS result)
    4. NRIC or valid Student’s Pass
    5. Passport
    Proceed to pay the Application Fee at the cashier counter in NAFA. If applicants choose to pay the Application Fee via online platforms, they will be required to upload the above documents during application.

  4. Submit your portfolio and necessary documents listed below at https://pss.nafa.edu.sg/ within 5 working days of your online application:
    1. Statement of Intent of about 200 words outlining your interest(s) of practice and/or work you aim to produce in the first semester
    2. Dissertation Proposal (for SOAD Degrees only) of about 200 words that outlines your research topic
    3. Personal Statement
    4. Curriculum Vitae
    5. Recommendation letter/testimonial
    6. Artwork portfolio for applicable courses (15-20 images)
  5. Receive a portfolio interview/audition date via email from the Student Admissions Office. Interview date and time will be allocated upon receipt of all completed supporting documents and application fee payment.
  6. Bring your artwork/portfolio and attend your interview/audition at our campus.
  7. Receive a letter by post indicating the outcome of your application within 4-6 weeks after your interview.
