Folk Wisdoms: Narratives Through Iconography

ISBN: 978-981-09-2674-8

In 2014, the Institute of Southeast Asian Arts (ISEAA) organised an interdisciplinary project involving students from academic departments of 3D Design, Fine Art and Design & Media. A five-day workshop was held from 25 to 29 August, involving principals from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta, followed by a field trip to the Asian Civilisations Museum for students to gain insights into forms of narratives through Asian folk motifs and iconographies.

Tapping into Indonesia's rich cultural heritage of folklore and mythology through time-honoured iconographies evident in traditional art forms, this publication documents the varied outcomes where students conceptualised and transformed narrative traditions into contemporary ideas, realising them into drawings, imageries, objects, models and short films that were showcased in an accompanying exhibition.
