NAFA Concert Series: From The New World

With the support of the Victoria Concert Hall - Home of the SSO, the NAFA Orchestra presented a concert at the end of the second academic semester on Saturday 13 April 2019. The performance, along with intensive and fulfilling rehearsals in the week leading up to the event, was directed by Maestro Alexey Vasilyev, Rector and Professor at The Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory. Gracing the event was the Russian Ambassador to Singapore Andrey Tatarinov and his wife Mrs. Natalia Tatarinova, as well as donors, several members of the NAFA Board and senior management, and other invited guests.

The evening’s performance opened with Mikhail Glinka’s Overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla. Dr. Nellie Seng, piano faculty member at the NAFA School of Music, was the soloist for Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor. Concluding the concert was Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 “From The New World”, described by music journalist Tom Service as “an evocation of some kind of musical otherness […] from outside the conventions of the late 19th century European symphony” and arguably one of the most popular orchestral compositions in the world.
