Thomas Yeo

Thomas Yeo graduated from NAFA in 1960 and went on to further his studies at Chelsea School of Art and the Hammersmith College of Art. In 1984, Yeo was conferred the Cultural Medallion by the Singapore Government. He also contributed to the academy serving as a member of the NAFA council from 2006 to 2011. In 2009, Yeo was awarded the academy’s first Distinguished Alumni Medal.

A second-generation Singaporean artist, Yeo is recognised for his abstract collages (mixed media) and gouache landscapes. His works hold an important place in the development and history of modern art in Singapore since the 1960s. Black Pillow represents a recurring dream that takes place whenever the artist lies on a black pillow to sleep. In the dream, he would encounter a village scene, where numerous stalls lined the pathway and people appeared to be celebrating an occasion. When it was time to leave, he was left stranded, unable to find a way home. Since painting Black Pillow, the dreams have stopped.

Black Pillow was acquired by Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 2018.
