Nyan Soe

Nyan Soe was born in Myanmar in 1987. He obtained a Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) with Honours from the University of East Yangon, Myanmar in 2007 and subsequently graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art (Sculpture) from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 2013.

The artwork title rorriM is “mirror” spelled in the reverse. The work presents a nexus of different degrees of order and logic in all manner of oddities occupying the cluttered shelves. Nyan Soe likens this to the process of growing as an artist, to take stock of one’s position in life and to ultimately confront the greater concepts of war, peace and social justice in the world.

“I like to stand in front of the work and listen to the voice from it.
There are too many things on the shelves.
It is too noisy! I agree!
But that is why I need to calm down and listen.
Every time I look at them, I always find something that will draw my attention to it.
There are bad things, good things, funny toys and failed works. It is fine!
Being present in the moment, slow down and move on!”

This work was acquired by Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 2017.
