“I deliberately mis-cast myself in iconic films, often performing all the roles and in languages foreign to me.”

Ming Wong (b. 1971, Singapore) is a Berlin-based artist whose work uses cinema and popular culture to interrogate how identity, language, gender, and place are constructed and circulated. Wong studied Fine Arts at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore before earning an MFA in Fine Art Media from the Slade School of Art, University College London. Through video, installation, photography, and performance—often reenacting classic films and playing multiple roles himself—he reveals the slippages haunting notions of “authenticity” and “originality.” Wong’s recent major exhibitions include AUUUUDITORIUM at Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai (2024) and Signals: How Video Transformed the World at MoMA New York (2023), and his performance Rhapsody in Yellow toured international festivals and Singapore (2022–24). In 2025 he was named Artist in Residence at the National Gallery, London, creating a new film and installation responding to its collection.
