A teacher once taught me that being an actor is not all glamor and glory. We need to learn to leave our pride at the door and humbly accept honest criticism gracefully. Becoming receptive to feedback and critique, regardless of whether positive or negative, has been essential in my personal and professional growth.

After hundreds of hours of acting classes, the most important skills that I have acquired include the ability to work under pressure and adapt as well as be flexible. Theatre students must be willing to try new ideas, accept challenges, and adapt to constantly changing situations and environments. In one production, you may be a backstage crew member; while in the next, you would be in-charge of directing or may have a leading role.

The biggest highlight of my career has to be the movie, Ah Girls Go Army, by local director, Jack Neo. In recent years, I have also started doing more teaching and directing for children in the NAFA Arts Preschool.

I would advise juniors to hone their technical skills with workshops available in local theatre companies, such as Suzuki Method of Acting Training offered at Nine Years Theatre. It is also important to polish one’s mandarin language skills if possible, as opportunities may be widened.

As the proverb “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” goes, I believe that once you have come so far, there is no need to worry about what the industry has in store for you. Instead, push forward, chart your path and don’t look back..
