Hella has many years of experience working as a Theatre Designer as well as teaching design to different levels of students. She was Resident Designer with the Chung Ying Theatre Company in Hong Kong from 1989 to 1994 and had conducted various workshops and courses on theatre set design. She was also Production Manager for Drama Box from 1999 to 2001.
Hella won the 6th Life! Theatre Awards 2006 for the Best Set Design (Happy Drama Box) and was nominated for Best Set Design in 2012 (Her Story Drama Box). She has exhibitions for her work in ‘A Showcase of Hong Kong Theatre Design’ (1995) and Prague Quadrennial ’95 (HKATTS).
She believes that theatre is a soul searching experience. It is an individual as well as a collaborative process. “Less is more!” is Hella’s motto for theatre design. Her idea of a successful production is one that touches the audience, awakens the senses and the soul from the monotonous routines of everyday life. Only then will one be able to look deeper into the state of our existence.
Hella has been with the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts since 2004 and has also lectured at LASALLE College of the Arts from 2008 to 2012.
