Chiew Sien Kuan
Restoration of the Old City
2018
Assemblage – wood, ready-made objects and steel
60 x 110 x 140 cm

Chiew Sien Kuan, whose works are organic, thought-provoking and contemplative, is a respected alumni artist and teacher in the NAFA community. Born in Singapore in 1965, Chiew studied at NAFA between 1986 and 1989 and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Art & Design at the University of Tasmania, Australia. In 1992, he was awarded the Highly Recommended Prize in the Australian Bicentennial Art Award of Young Artists (Painting) and first prize in the 3D category at the Philippe Charriol Foundation Contemporary Art Competition (Sculpture). This exhibition is the artist’s first solo exhibition, a survey of his practice from 1993 to recent years. A selection of paintings, assemblage and installations offer an introspective glimpse into the artist’s mind and his research interests. For Chiew, through making and thinking, work is constantly in progress, sometimes unfinished, yet remains cathartic and free-spirited.
