As part of an ongoing academic collaboration between the Institute of Southeast Asian Arts and the School of Music, NAFA is pleased to present Koro Kalinangán: a lecture recital on Philippine choral music with the acclaimed Singapore-based Filipino choir, PsalmiDeo Chorale.
Established in 2002, PsalmiDeo Chorale has been promoting Philippine culture and artistry through their unique repertoire of entertaining and thought-provoking pieces from diverse genres and musical periods, across various venues in Singapore. The choir is currently under the musical direction of esteemed Filipino-American conductor and pedagogue, Dr Joel Navarro, and assistant conductor, Professor Eudenice Palaruan.
In conjunction with the Composers’ Seminar inviting Dr Navarro and Professor Palaruan for an academic facilitation as part of the Composition module taught by Head of Composition Studies, Dr Zechariah Goh Toh Chai, this programme showcases a selection of choral arrangements and compositions inspired by Filipino folk and liturgical song genres, together with a demonstration and dialogue session, offering a glimpse at the rubrics of choral performance and compositional methodology behind one of the myriad ethnic traditions of group singing in Southeast Asia.
