Young Artist of the 1st Espoo International Piano Festival in May 1991, Finnish pianist Janne Mertanen came to the attention of the wider musical public in 1992 with a win at the International Chopin Competition in Darmstadt, Germany. In the same year, he also won the First Prize at the Nyborg Nordic Competition. He has had orchestra engagements in South America, Asia, and Europe, while recital appearances have taken him around most of Europe, as well as Canada, America, Australia, and Asia. His recordings of works by Chopin, Sibelius, Rota, Grieg, and Schumann have been released by the Finlandia, Alba, and Sony Classical labels. Mertanen is the Artistic Director of the Joensuu Music Festival, and a Steinway Artist.
