Preparatory English Course (Pre-intermediate and Intermediate)

Introduction

Diploma students who are successful in their application but do not meet the English Language requirement for their course will have the option to enrol in the NAFA Preparatory English Course, which is conducted before the commencement of their diploma course.

The NAFA Preparatory English Course aims to improve students’ command of English and equip them with reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, that will enhance their learning of the arts at the tertiary level. The course adopts a holistic approach that focuses on:

  • Facilitating learning with learner-centred practice tasks and activities
  • Equipping students with strategies for building vocabulary, listening, reading and comprehension capacities
  • Instilling students’ confidence in communicating ideas and intentions

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Listen critically
  • Read and comprehend texts at literal and inferential levels
  • Communicate effectively using a variety of techniques to engage in discussions
  • Express ideas through writing coherently and cohesively


There are two modules offered in the NAFA Preparatory English Course; ENG1100 Pre-intermediate level English and ENG1200 Intermediate level English. Applicants will be placed in the appropriate module(s) as determined by their submitted English Language proficiency scores from certification systems such as TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, or equivalent.

On successful completion of the course, students may progress on to the diploma programmes.

ENG1100 Pre-intermediate Level English
ENG1100 Pre-intermediate Level English covers four components of language learning: listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills. The approach integrates receptive skills (listening and reading) with productive skills (speaking and writing) to provide an effective learning environment.

Students learn a range of listening strategies from identifying gist and intention, to previewing main ideas to improve decoding skills. Students apply a host of reading tips such as locating specific information using skimming and scanning to increase reading and comprehension competencies.

Through daily interaction with peers, students have the opportunity to practice speaking and expressing their ideas, and build their confidence in oral communication. By learning rules of the language such as parts of speech, grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, spelling, subject-verb agreement, question, and sentence construction, students acquire fundamental writing skills.


ENG1200 Intermediate Level English
ENG1200 Intermediate Level English covers four components of language learning: listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills. The approach integrates receptive skills (listening and reading) with productive skills (speaking and writing) to provide a holistic learning environment.

Students learn a range of listening strategies from extracting specific information, to identifying context clues to enhance accuracy. Students study a variety of text types to increase their reading and comprehension competencies. Through daily speaking exercises and frequent oral presentations, students sharpen their speaking abilities. By learning rules of the language such as grammar, tenses, parts of speech, syntax, text coherence and style, students acquire techniques to write exposition and argumentative essays.

The minimum English Language proficiency requirement for the Preparatory English Course (ENG1100 Pre-Intermediate and ENG1200 Intermediate) are as follows:
