Preparatory English Course


Diploma students who are successful in their application but who do not meet the English language requirement for their course, may be required to attend a Preparatory English course before the commencement of the diploma course.

The Preparatory English course aims to increase students’ command of English and equip them with essential communication skills that will enhance their learning of the Arts at tertiary level. The course adopts a holistic approach that focuses on:

  • Facilitating learning that is interactive, as well as learner and process-centred
  • Equipping students with essential aural‐oral, vocabulary building, listening, reading, information-gathering and writing skills
  • Instilling students’ confidence in listening, speaking and writing, both in and out of classroom settings

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will learn how to:

  • Heighten their awareness in listening critically
  • Develop the ability to read critically and comprehend texts at literal and inferential levels
  • Communicate effectively using a variety of techniques to actively engage in a discussion
  • Develop, organise and express ideas in writing coherently and cohesively

There are different levels of the Preparatory English course. Students will be placed at the appropriate level as determined by the results of their English Placement Test.

On successful completion of the course, students may progress on to the Diploma programmes.

ENG1101 Writing Skills 1A

The module covers the fundamental skills in writing with emphasis on a good foundation in grammar and sentence construction.

ENG1102 Comprehension Skills 1A

The module aims to help students develop reading skills in an incremental way by expanding their vocabulary level and through the understanding of reading texts.

ENG1103 Oral Communication 1A

The module aims to help students gain confidence in their use of the English language during daily interaction and discussions on a wide range of topics.

ENG1104 Listening Skills 1A

The module exposes students to a variety of texts and readings to develop their skills in listening for gist and specific information.

ENG1201 Writing Skills 1B

This module covers the essential skills to enable students to work towards writing effective essays with complex sentences and coherent paragraphs.

ENG1202 Comprehension Skills 1B

The module aims to develop skills in reading to enable students to evaluate complex texts and to make inferences.

ENG1203 Oral Communication 1B

This module focuses on the elements of speech-making. Techniques such as projecting one’s voice, speaking at a good pace, and body language will also be covered.

ENG1204 Listening Skills 1B

The module exposes students to complex spoken texts to help them further improve their pronunciation, intonation and stress patterns.

Course Fees

Preparatory English Course S$2,500 for 8 weeks (Stage 1), fee applies to international students
S$2,500 for 8 weeks (Stage 2), fee applies to international students
Preparatory English Course (Supplementary) S$1,500 for 4 weeks, fee applies to international students
S$1,200 for 4 weeks, fee applies to Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents of Singapore

Other Fee

This is a compulsory fee payable in addition to the course fee and are non-refundable.
Administrative Fee (1-time charge and non-refundable): S$100

Fee Protection Scheme

NAFA has put in place the Fee Protection Scheme (FPS) by way of insurance facility to protect the fees of students paid to NAFA. The FPS covers the Tuition Fee which is paid by students in every semester. Students will receive a copy of the certificate of insurance from our appointed FPS provider by way of email. The insured period will commence from the fee payment date or the date when the money is credited to NAFA's Bank account (via Telegraphic Transfer). Refund Policy - Preparatory English Course (More than 30 days or 50 Hours)

Refund Scenarios

100% of the Course Fee and Administrative Fee paid

  1. If Student’s written notice of withdrawal is received within Cooling-off Period, that is, within 7 working days after signing the Contract; or
  2. If Student’s Pass application is rejected by Immigration and Checkpoints Authority; or
  3. The Academy:
    1. does not commence the course on Course Commencement Date
    2. terminates the course before Course Commencement Date
    3. does not complete the course by the Course Completion Date
    4. terminates the course before the Course Completion Date
    5. has not ensured that the student meets the course entry or matriculation requirement as set by the Academy stated in Student Contract within the stipulated timeline set by CPE
100% of the Course Fee paid less Telegraphic Transfer Charges (where applicable) If Student’s written notice of withdrawal is received after Cooling-off Period and more than 14 calendar days before the Course Commencement Date
No Refund If Student’s written notice of withdrawal is received not more than 14 calendar days before the Course Commencement Date or after the Course Commencement Date


  1. Aside from the voluntary withdrawal requests put up by the Students, the above Refund Policy is also applicable when the Student is expelled from NAFA or withdrawal from the course for any reason.
  2. NAFA reserves the right to claim against the Student and/or parent/guardian for any balance outstanding payment due and payable.
