Industry Experience

George worked for a few prominent business tycoons in the region, before starting his own design studio, Cynosure Design Pte Ltd in 1998. He then ventured into China in 2000 to set up his office, Budiman Design (Shanghai) Ltd, counting MNCs, established real estate firms and banks as clients.  In 2003, Malaysia Cynosure Design SDN BHD was set-up.

George sat on the Executive Council of the Society of Interior Designers Singapore (SIDS) from 1999 - 2004, as Treasurer and Chairman. In 2007, he served as a Founding Executive Member of Interior Designers Confederations of Singapore (IDCS).

In 2010, George was awarded the Singapore CENTRE @ SHANGHAI, an office space in Shanghai for Singapore government agencies. In 2011, he designed info com IDA @ SHANGHAI and Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s first office in Shanghai, China. In the same year, he launched “Vitrine”, an annual IDCS publication showcasing prominent and emerging designers from Singapore. Led by George, his group of design consultants was appointed chief interior designer for the OCBC China Towner in 2011.

In 2012, George represented IDCS to be the speaker at the APSDA general Assembly in Beijing. Also in 2012, George founded the Asian Creative Industry Alliances (ACIA) with the strong support of the Shanghai Government and Industry and Design Singapore Council. As the founder and Chairman of ACIA, he initiated and organised the ACIA’s Power talk series. The first “Power of Creative Design Industry” Summit was held in Shanghai in November 2012, to critical reviews. Extensive coverage was received from key media in both China and Singapore. In the same year, he was appointed Creative Development Chairman for Design S, an alliance of nine design associations in Singapore.

In 2013, ACIA launched another Power Talk Series “Future of Asia Design” conference in Shanghai with the support of Singapore Tourism Board and Shanghai Government. He was also elected President of IDCS from November 2013 to November 2015 and featured in an article in Lianhe Zaobao, “The man who promotes Asia creative talents to the world”.

In 2014, George was appointed Chairman of the IDCS - ACIA 2014 Design Summit held in conjunction with the Singapore Design Week 2014. He led a group of 30 designers from Shanghai to participate in the event. In collaboration with M&O Paris, ACIA’s Power talk series was held in conjunction.

George was also the curator for Shanghai Design Week Asia Pavilion and International Advisor for Shanghai City Thousand Creative Talents programmes in 2014.


George won the Overall Design Excellence Award and Best Malaysia Tourism Bar award in Malaysia from 2004 to 2006. In 2012, he was nominated for both Designer of the Year and Project of the Year at the annual President Design Award.
