Heng Lena

Lena started learning to play the piano at the age of 8, and has obtained a Grade 8 in Piano Performance. In 1997, she started learning to play the Erhu, under the guidance of Mr Ng Seng Hong. She graduated with a Degree in Music in 2007 under the tutelage of Mr Wong Sun Tat. She is also currently under the guidance of Mr Wong On-Yuen and Mr Li Bao Shun.

In 1999, Lena was awarded 2nd Prize in the National Chinese Music Competition Open Category - Folk Music / Wind & / or Percussion Ensemble; and 2001, she clinched the 1st Prize in the National Chinese Music Competition Senior Ensemble Category.

Lena was granted the Hokkien Huay Kuan Scholarship in 2004. She was also awarded the NAC - Georgette Chen Arts Scholarship in 2005, and the NAC Arts Bursary for her Degree course in 2006.

Lena is a musician with the Ding Yi Music Company. She is a keen musician not only in Chinese orchestral music, but also in traditional Chinese folk music. In 2007, the Ministry of the Information and the Arts sponsored her studies in Nanyin at Xiamen, China, under the guidance of Wu Shi An and Wang Xiu Yi. Lena has also learnt Teochew Music and Teochew Erxian from renowned master, Li Xian Lie. She is the first female Teochew Erxian performer, having played the Teochew Erxian at the concert《潮韵新声会知音》in 2009.

A part-time lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Lena is also currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Music. As someone who enjoys writing and at the same time, is passionate about sharing Chinese music with more people, Lena owns a blog ( in which she publishes information, discussions, interviews and other writings about various topics in Chinese music.
