Biography

Bacus Boo is a cross-disciplinary designer trained in interior architecture design as well as product and industrial design. Upon completing his design education in 1992, he began working at Space Partnership, Ed Poole Associates, and subsequently, established his own businesses such as Bomania Designworx, Lab Floret, and 1degOFF™ in 1996, and co-founded renowned Singapore furniture brand and design company, Air Division, in 1999, which is the first Singaporean company to sell its designs to high-end furniture retailers.

Bacus has won the Young Designers Award for three consecutive years back in 1988 when Trade Development Board (TDB), now IE Singapore opened the Design Centre and organised the first International Design Forum during ICSID. In 2008, he was the winner of MULTIPLICITY Art of Prototyping Competition, organized by The Furniture Society of New York, with his design art piece named ‘ASOBU Playtable’, making its debut at ICFF and Neuberger Museum of Art.

Besides creating furniture and art objects, Bacus has also actively engaged in curatorial work with numerous local homegrown talents. He has produced several exhibitions internationally, such as ‘Animal Farm’, ‘Light Play’, ‘Planaroids’, and ‘The New Orientales’ in Milan, New York, Paris, and Cologne, as well as ‘100% Design Shanghai’ in China.

In 2005, Bacus crossed the boundary of design and ventured into art with 1degOFF™ labelled as a brand initiative of a design-art group launched under his directorship and has become a synonym brand name in Singapore for cutting edge furniture design and contemporary art.

Bacus has transited from a multi-disciplinary designer to managing the intricacies of Industry and Design Development at the Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC) in 2010. His primary role is to develop and bridge the gaps between designers and manufacturers as the Head of the Industry and Design Development Division. With over 20 years of experience in the design industry, Bacus is currently spearheading a design festival, SingaPlural, as the anchor event of Singapore Design Week. During his tenure, he has developed a love for the industry through nurturing young talents and grooming them to be successful entrepreneurs and promising international designers.
