Educated at the Shanghai Conservatory, majoring in piano, Mdm Fang performed with the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra since 1973. She made regular appearances on TV and Radio and has performed in more than 30 cities in China. She has also performed in Switerzland, Italy, France, Germany, New Zealand, UK and USA. Many of her performances been recorded and her music arrangements published. She immigrated to Singapore in 1984.
She was the Founder of the Gifted Young Pianists Course at NAFA in 1991 and was subsequently appointed Founding Principal of the School of Young Talents and Head of Junior Music Department in 1999. The Gifted Young Musician’s programme has a world record for achieving 100% distinction rate for the ABRSM examinations.
Through her dedication, the School has nurtured hundreds of young musicians and established a good reputation. Students of the Junior Music Department have won more than 550 prizes in international and national competitions. Out of the 277 winners for piano, almost 60% are her students.
Her students are received by world renowned music schools such as the Royal College of Music, London; the Eastman School of Music; The Purcell School. Her students’ concert in 1999 at the Yehudi Menuhin School was critically acclaimed as having “brought the house down”, and the concert in Central London receiving standing ovations.
In recognition of her teaching excellence, she was also invited by the 2nd World Piano Conference in Slovenia 2003 and the 27th European Piano Conference in Manchester (UK) in 2005 to showcase her teaching methods.
She is listed by the Cambridge International Biographical Centre in the “Directories of ‘International Who’s Who in Music and Musicians’”, “International Who’s Who of Intellectuals” and the “Dictionary of International Biographies” in 1992.
In 2006 and 2010 she received the Compass Meritorious Award for her outstanding contributions to music education in Singapore and the Outstanding New Immigrant Award.
