NAFA x BCA UD outreach
In an outreach effort by the Building and Construction
Authority (BCA) to engage youths in the promotion of
Universal Design (UD), students from NAFA’s Diploma
in Illustration Design with Animation worked with BCA
to produce animation clips revolving around the theme
of UD and inclusivity in the built environment. On 20 July
2017, two works titled The Way Home and UDopia were
screened for the first time at the BCA Universal Design
Charity Dinner – Building Bridges, held at Gardens by
the Bay. Through the animation clips developed by NAFA
and other institutes of higher learning, BCA hopes to raise
public’s awareness on the importance of UD and its role in ImaginAsia 2017
building an inclusive Singapore.
Senior Lecturer Dr Lim Poh Teck and four Year 3 Design
and Media students represented NAFA at ImaginAsia 2017,
held in Tokyo. The topic was Tokyo: A Trans-Asian City.
Students attended lectures and workshops, and also worked
in small groups to explore the rich presence of various
Asian traditions in Tokyo with socio-historical and critical
consciousness. Our students also
carried out field research,
with the final outcomes
revolving around the
topic presented for
discussion.
NAFA x VCA — Sound and Image
of Future Landscape
Led by Vice Dean, Design and Media, Christabel Teng and Senior Lecturer and
Programme Leader of Illustration Design with Animation, Peh Mei Lian, a group
of Design and Media students engaged in a project that was carried out with
Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), The University of Melbourne in August 2017.
10 Interactive Composition students, together with two professors from VCA, Heritage trail in
Dr Anthony Lyons (Interactive Composition) and Paul Fletcher (Digital Animation),
travelled to Singapore. The project took the form of an intensive five-day workshop, Little India for
with the students working together on a shared theme, leading to a joint exhibition
of their creative collaborations in sound and visuals. In addition to the joint project, preschoolers
the two professors from VCA shared their professional practice with other NAFA
staff and students.
As part of their graduation project
and in partnership with the National
Heritage Board, Year 3 Diploma in
Arts Management students designed,
managed and executed a heritage
trail programme for preschoolers
aged 5 to 6. The students received
curatorial training from Indian
Heritage Centre’s curators to put
together a museum tour and heritage
trail, which took place in Little India.
They also created costumes, props
and activity booklets. The two-hour
programme was conducted with
My First Skool students and teachers,
and reached out to approximately 220
preschool children.
