ALMA MATTER
Initiated by the NAFA Fine Art Alumni Chapter and in
partnership with Chan + Hori Contemporary, Alma Matter was
held at Chan + Hori Contemporary Gallery from 24 May to
17 June 2018. The expressive exhibition featured selected
works from artists who had graduated from NAFA in the past
10 years. Curated by NAFA’s alumnus Khairuddin Hori, the
exhibition took inspiration from a wordplay of alma mater,
which ordinarily refers to an institution one had studied in and
graduated from. Alma Matter alluded to the artists’ past training
at the academy, while simultaneously observing their place in
the contemporary art landscape of today. Approximately 110
participants and guests attended the show opening.
The alumni who exhibited were Samuel Chen, Khairul Ikhwan,
Warren Khong, Fiona Koh, Loi Cai Xiang, Justin Loke, Ong
Si Hui, Ezzam Rahman, Sebastian Mary Tay and Ella Wijt.
There was also an enlightening artists’ dialogue on ‘Why go
to Art School’ conducted in conjunction with the exhibition.
Artists Ezzam and Gerald Leow presented their insightful
views on the topic.

THE UPCYCLING JOURNEY TAIWAN 2018
From 7 to 20 December, eight students from various
programmes and two staff from the Office of Student Care
and Internship, embarked on an enlightening volunteer
trip to Taoyuan, Taiwan. Participants engaged in a unique
collaboration with The Carpenter’s House (TCH) Caring
Center, which involved the recycling and upcycling of
abundant materials into useful products. They were also
exposed to the challenges and limitations that occurred
during the redesigning and fabrication phases.
This creative experiential-learning process furnished
students with an understanding of the Taiwanese culture,
while servicing and working with the special needs
community. The enriching experience concluded with a
closing celebration with the TCH staff, invited elderly and
guests from the deaf society.
FIRST AID TRAINING WORKSHOPS
Student leaders attended a first aid training workshop organised by the
Office of Student Care and Internship between 25 and 27 July 2018.
The interactive workshop, conducted by Singapore First Aid Training Centre
at NAFA Campus 1, aimed to equip students with essential life-saving skills.
A total of 16 students were awarded two-year certificates accredited by the
Singapore Resuscitation and First Aid Council.
In February and May 2018, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and
automated external defibrillator (AED) courses were held for our staff.
The 15 attendees from the Student Services Division and Pastoral Care Team,
gained a deeper understanding of safety within the workplace. All participants
successfully achieved certificates in CPR and AED, valid until 2020.
