Student Bio Project Description
Julia Tong is a well-rounded Landscape Designer whose Tired of having activity restricted spaces, landscapes
goal is to be a Landscape Architect discovering a new era must evolve in all dimensions that can serve as a solution
for local landscape architecture. During her spare time, she and alternative to nullify high-density living conditions. LÆ,
becomes an urban dweller as a photographer. In 2019, she the proposed multi-modal landscape to be refurbished
interned at Cicada Pte Ltd, one of Asia’s leading landscape underneath the Ang Mo Kio MRT viaduct, is an upcoming
architecture firms. She has an extensive volunteering idea for adaptive reuse in this urban utopia. Located in a
background and is a current volunteer of the Green Market densely populated town, space is not a given and density can
by NParks. For her perseverance, she was awarded the Tan impact the built environment. The addition of LÆ opens the
Chay Bing Scholarship for the Academic Year of 2018/2019. enclosed space to provide the experience of a semi-shaded
park and is spatially configured with programmes, allowing
for events of all scale.
4 key zones make up the site: Water Front, Atrium,
Community Square and Green Edge. The “Water Front”
showcases a water basin to captivate visitors. Beside it, the
“Atrium” brings people to gather among the greens. Adjacent
to the community centre, the “Community Square” is the
area for hosting public events and lastly, the “Green Edge”
carries what each zone have to be catered for the elderly,
specifically those in the nursing home. The zones encourage
communities to come together into a shared space while also
letting individuals design the space as they seem fit.
This proposed design no longer presents the viaduct as a
narrow-isolated shelter but rather a site to further connect
neighbouring parks and residents of Ang Mo Kio. This project
acts as a new form of ‘test bed’ which could be played out as
a possibility for other viaducts in Singapore.
