BIOGRAPHY

(Artist Statement)

Ananya investigates the absurdity of the obsession with being ‘beautiful’ in contemporary urban societies. Through the series of masks mounted on plaques, she seeks to preserve the unique self-identity discarded when women use plastic surgery to alter their appearance, to fit into a particular beauty ideal upheld by society; revealing the underlying obsession with attaining an impossible, constantly changing ideal. These skin trophies are influenced by the practice of taxidermy, plastic surgery and the desire to preserve one’s appearance, and emphasise the impact of a consumer society obsessed with performance, innovation, and the pliability of self-presentation.
