BIOGRAPHY

(Artist Statement)

As a living person, one may never be able to fully comprehend what the afterlife holds. Chung Kwang’s practice aims to explore the notion of the afterlife based on the artist’s spiritual beliefs within Mahayana Buddhism and Taoism. In presenting a life-sized statue that resembles an apparition or divinity made of decayed shrouds, the work aims to represent both metaphorical death and physical life whilst resembling an apparition or deity. The presentation is an attempt to challenge the audience’s perception and experiences when looking at a non-living entity that appears sentient, life-like, or prayerful.
