Introduction

The Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM) is the leading music institution in China. To promote traditional Chinese music and culture, CCOM has carried out Chinese Instruments Graded Examinations in many countries and regions since 1989. In line with the mission to make music education universal, CCOM aims to provide professional and the highest examination standards for amateur Chinese instrumentalists around the world by utilizing a structured approach of learning and fine traditions.

To promote traditional Chinese music in Singapore and strengthen the cultural exchange and collaboration between China and Southeast Asia, the CCOM Chinese Instruments Graded Examinations will be conducted by Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) in Singapore.

  • Examinable Instruments
    The Graded Examinations will comprise 10 main instruments, namely Erhu, Pipa, Guzheng, Dizi, Yangqin, Suona, Ruan, Sheng, Liuqin and Percussion.

  • Examination Grades
    The Graded Examinations consist of Grades 1 to 9 and Performance Grade * (a total of 10 grades).

    *There is no Performance Grade examination for Percussion.

    Performance Grade
    Candidates registering for the Performance Grade examination are required to attach a photocopy of their Grade 9 certificate jointly issued by NAFA and CCOM for verification.

    Candidates who attained a DISTINCTION for the Performance Grade may be considered for exemption from the music audition when applying for admission to the NAFA School of Music’s Chinese Instrumental Studies.

  • Examination Requirements
    Candidates are to prepare a total of 3 pieces:

    1) 1 Technical Study Music Piece (Memorisation NOT needed)
    2) 2 Solo Music Pieces (Memorisation needed for BOTH pieces)

    Examiners will select one of the 2 Solo Music Pieces for judging. Candidates must upload BOTH Solo Music Pieces.

    Failure to do so will result in disqualification from the examination.

    Note: All pieces are to be chosen from the official CCOM Examination Syllabus (Overseas Version). Click here for information.

    *Candidates of age 18 and above are allowed to apply for exemption from memorisation, but must provide documentation for verification of age. Candidates should state and show clearly in their recordings the documentations for verification of age.

    Accompanying musician(s) or accompanying track are NOT allowed for the examination.

    All repeat signs are to be disregarded. At places where there are “1st Time House” and “2nd Time House”, the Candidate may proceed directly to “2nd Time House” in the first play through.

    Video requirements
    Candidates are to ensure the following video requirements are fulfilled:
    1. Candidate’s face must be visible in the shot. (Must match the identification document as provided)
    2. No editing, cuts or pauses are allowed for the recording. (One shot recording)
    3. All required pieces (1 Technical Study Music Piece + 2 Solo Music Pieces) must be completed and uploaded before the deadline.
    4. Alternative versions or arrangements of the examination pieces are not allowed. Pieces must be taken from the NAFA Chinese Instruments Graded Exam Syllabus 2023 (see below).

    Video sequence to be followed:
    1. The Candidate MUST NOT LEAVE THE CAMERA FRAME once entered.
    2. Candidate must ensure that face is visible in the shot.
    3. State their registered name and show the registered Identification Document.
    4. Announce their programme, clearly stating the title of the pieces chosen and the sequence in which they will play it in.
    5. The Candidate must also show the purchased hard copy of the NAFA Chinese Instruments Graded Exam Syllabus 2023 Book to the camera.
    6. Proceed to their performing spot with their instrument(s) ready.
    7. Play through all 3 pieces, with the Candidate’s body and face clearly in the shot. (The Candidate may sit slighted slanted for ease of playing posture, as long as the playing is visible as a whole).

  • Examination Syllabus
    Please purchase the NAFA Chinese Instruments Graded Examination Committee recognised syllabus from the following suppliers. Failure to produce certified examination syllabus during the examination registration will result in disqualification from the graded examination.

As of 2022, all NAFA-CCOM Examination Certification must be collected from NAFA before April 2024. Candidates will be notified via email for date of collection.

Please note that there will be no disclosure of examination results by phone or by email.

Review of Results/Re-examination
There will be NO review of results and NO re-examination. The examiners’ decision is final.
