In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Philippines-Singapore diplomatic relations, NAFA is pleased to partner with the National Museum of the Philippines, Office of Representative Loren Legarda and the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in Singapore in organising the Hibla ng Lahing Filipino Travelling Exhibition, lecture series, weaving demonstrations and embroidery workshops. The project, featuring the travelling exhibition entitled Piña-Seda: Pineapple and Silk Cloths from the Tropics, highlights the processes involved in piña-seda weaving and embroidery to tell a story of a traditional Philippine textile that binds generations of Filipinos. It showcases more than 30 raw materials and textiles from piña and silk weaving centres in Aklan and La Union respectively, and an embroidery centre in Laguna, the Philippines, including a piña foot loom and a video-documentary of piña weaving in the province of Aklan. Piña as a traditional and unique source of Philippine fiber and piña weaving as an intangible heritage of the Philippines demonstrate the sociocultural as well as economic aspects of early and contemporary Philippine lowland communities. This exhibition will be accompanied by lectures, piña-seda weaving demonstrations and embroidery workshops to be conducted by local specialists from the provinces of Aklan and Laguna. These corollary programmes will discuss the outlook of this traditional weaving and embroidery heritage in contemporary society.
