Merce Cunningham said: ‘You have to love dancing to stick to it. It gives you nothing back, no manuscripts to store away, no paintings to show on walls and maybe hang in museums, no poems to be printed and sold, nothing but that single fleeting moment when you feel alive. It is not for unsteady souls.’ I can't agree more. I keep growing in dance as a person and as an artist. It's a life-long adventure.
Xuexin (Nico) Li, focused on contemporary dance and choreography during her studies at NAFA, and won the NAFA Best Graduate Award in 2008. Nico was the first student to be accepted during her senior year to complete a BFA in Dance in the United States through the uniquely designed programme between the NAFA Dance Department and Purchase College, State University of New York. She graduated in 2009 with Summa Cum Laude. Nico is incredibly grateful for the opportunities she had while she studied at NAFA.
Nico currently resides in New York City where she works with Syren Modern Dance and ChrisMastersDance as a dancer and movement collaborator. Nico has also been making her own works since being in New York. Her works have been presented at Treskelion Arts Center, Spoke The Hub Performing Arts Center, Gowanus Art + Production, New York Chinese Cultural Center, among others. Most recently, Nico is invited to The Yard Creative Residency on Martha's Vineyard to collaborate and dance in Yin Mei's new production Farewell My Concubine.
Nico believes that, "We lose ourselves in the things we love. We find ourselves there, too."
