Although Singapore is a small country, it has no lack of arts educators. In mentioning institutions that nurture children’s artistic talents especially, NAFA’s School of Young Talents (SYT) and its founding principal, Fang Yuan, come to mind. Hailing from Shanghai, pianist Mdm Fang was invited to teach piano lessons in NAFA in 1991. She had already known then that Singapore would be an ideal place to nurture artistic talent.
“When I arrived, I found the place akin to a cultural desert. Piano students had no solid foundations in their execution. I said then to give me three years to establish a piano class for young talents in the nation, that I may properly groom them.” said Mdm Fang. This class, which officially started in August 1991, would become the forefront of SYT. Throughout its 20 years of establishment, SYT has produced several award winners in local and international competitions including violinist Chloe Chua.
