The 3rd Nanyang International Music Competition (Chinese Music) hosted by the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) successfully concluded last Sunday, 25 Jul 2021. This was the first time the competition was held entirely online, and it is believe to be the first of its kind to have all facets held online, from the registration to judging phases. The competition included instruments such as Erhu, Banhu, Dizi, Guzheng, Pipa, Yangqin, Zhongruan, and Liuqin. All entrants submitted their entries in the form of recorded videos. After categorising the entries, the professional judges for each group watched the videos online at the same time, and scores were given on the spot. Audiences could watch the judging process online via social media to ensure openness and fairness of the competition. Sunny Wong, Head of Studies, Chinese Instrumental at NAFA said, “the competition benefitted from being webcasted, which allowed for it to be successfully held during the pandemic, overcoming regional restrictions. There were more than 650 participants from 10 countries including China, Japan, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, and the United States. Among them, many hail from well-known institutions such as the Central Conservatory of Music, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and National Taiwan University of Arts.”
