NAFA’s new Talent Development Programme sees students receiving high honours

Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) will be conferring a historic total of 914 certificates to its graduating students from all 21 Diploma and 8 Degree courses at its annual Convocation Ceremony from 6 September to 8 September 2019.

NAFA’s Convocation Ceremony 2019 will be held at the Lee Foundation Theatre, NAFA Campus 3. Mr Baey Yam Keng, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Transport & Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth will grace the occasion as Guest of Honour at the morning ceremony on 6 September.

This year will also see the inaugural graduating cohort of three degree courses, which was administered in partnership with the University of Central Lancashire, namely BA (Hons) Design and Media, BA (Hons) Fine Art Practice and BA (Hons) 3D Design Practice.

To date, over 15,000 NAFA graduates have emerged as accomplished artists, leaders, mentors and educators in the arts and creative industries. They have garnered accolades and awards in international competitions and exhibitions and contributed actively in an increasingly creative economy, both in Singapore and beyond.

Talent Development Programme (TDP)
Convocation 2019 also marks the graduation of the first cohort of NAFA’s Talent Development Programme (TDP) which was launched in 2018. In line with the academy’s commitment to realise students’ full potential, the TDP was established to advance exceptional students who are self-motivated and dedicated to deepening their skills and knowledge beyond the curriculum. These students have undergone internal mentorship programmes and were given opportunities for external training and projects to further develop and sharpen their artistic, technical and leadership skills. Among the 10 in the cohort, seven will be receiving NAFA’s top convocation awards, namely Natasha Benedicta, Nicole Choo Jen Quinn, Edward Tan Jia Liang, Lim Ying Xuan Jonelle, Chow Jia Xin Marisa, Ong Wei Lin Joanna and Denise Dannii Tan Shin Ting:

Outstanding Students
Nicole Choo Jen Quinn is one of the few graduands who will be receiving two awards. An aspiring artist and earnest learner who is also dedicated to the community, Nicole is a volunteer with the Children’s Cancer Foundation and Loving Heart Multi-Service Centre, as well as a Youth Arts and Culture Representative of the People’s Association Youth Movement. As part of the TDP, she partnered the Thye Hua Kwan Moral Charity on a project which brought to light the forgotten stories of elderly with dementia. The outcome of the project was exhibited at the National Library in April 2019. Nicole is currently furthering her studies in the BA (Hons) Fine Art Programme at NAFA in addition to her work as a consultant in YANG Gallery.

Another student who has been transformed through their journey in NAFA is BA (Hons) Spatial Design graduand Abdul Hakeem James Hausley. Hakeem enrolled in NAFA’s 3D Design Programme after acquiring a NITEC in Digital Animation from ITE Macpherson. He graduated as Best Graduate, Diploma in Design (Landscape & Architecture) last year and has again bagged the Best Graduate award in his course. An aspiring landscape architect, Hakeem aims to create designs which will also improve the social and physical well-being of the users. His design for an urban sanctuary bridging Orchard Road and the Dhoby Ghaut area was shortlisted for Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA) Student Design Awards 2018. He is now working as a Junior/ Assistant Landscape Architect with Cicada Landscape Design, one of Asia’s leading landscape architect firms.

Nicole Choo Jen Quinn and Abdul Hakeem James Hausley are just two of NAFA’s many outstanding talents whose impressive accomplishments will be recognised at the upcoming Convocation Ceremony.

Distinguished Alumni Medal
In 2009, NAFA established the Distinguished Alumni Medal to acknowledge its outstanding alumni, an accolade which hallmarks the Academy’s history of nurturing world class talent. This year, the honour will be given to local multidisciplinary dancer and artist Lim Chin Huat, a familiar name in Singapore’s dance scene. He graduated from NAFA in 1991 with a Diploma in Fine Art, and subsequently a Diploma in Dance in 1994. He was a student of Cultural Medallion artist Wee Beng Chong and trained with Cultural Medallion dancer Angela Liong. As the co-founder and artistic director of ECNAD from 1996 to 2013, he has an oeuvre of over 70 creative works, mainly full-length dance since 1993. His works have been featured in many local and international arts scenes. A highly acclaimed and award-winning cross-disciplinary artist, Chin Huat has worked as a visual artist, performer, dancer, choreographer, costume designer, facilitator, to educator. In 2000, he was conferred the coveted Young Artist Award by the National Arts Council for his contributions to the arts. He maintains close connections with his alma mater and was most recently a guest performer in NAFA’s 80th anniversary operetta production of Die Fledermaus – The Revenge of the Bat.
