Graduates work with young artists to cultivate local arts scene
This year, the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) graduating class of 2017 will be conferred a total of 747 diploma and degree certificates from diploma and degree courses at NAFA’s annual Convocation Ceremony. Many of NAFA’s graduates have displayed a strong drive and enterprising spirit in their work, and have actively participated in major activities and projects in the local arts industry, outside of school.
Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Creative Industry Management graduate Muhammad Norisham Bin Osman is a graduate who has exhibited great promise in his studies as well as the local arts scene. Norisham, who previously graduated with a Diploma in Arts Management from NAFA in 2011, is also the Founder and Artistic Director of Kaizen M.D., a performing arts collective that gathers young artists from various art disciplines to create multidisciplinary works. In addition to his valuable experience in stage and production management, teaching and choreography, he is also an accomplished actor. His involvement in Singapore’s arts industry has led to notable achievements such as the Goh Chok Tong Youth Promise Award (Merit) in 2015 and a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the M1-The Straits Times Life Theatre Awards 2016.
Masturah Binte Oli Mohamed, who will be graduating with a Diploma with distinction in Theatre (English Drama), is one of the Valedictorians for this year’s convocation and a recipient of the Best Graduate award. Armed with a passion for performing since young, Masturah joined Buds Theatre Company’s Buds Youth Theatre (BYT) in 2015, hoping to further develop her theatre skills. Alongside juggling her studies, she has grown tremendously in this role and is currently the Head of Youth at BYT, a position in which she facilitates contact between aspiring youth and industry professionals. Masturah is also a Youth Ambassador for the Asian Youth Theatre Festival in October and will be lending her skills as a host for the event. A strong believer in the benefits drama can provide in shaping young minds, she aims to share her theatre experience with young children and youth, empowering them with opportunities to create new work. She is currently reading a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Theatre Arts at NAFA.
Norisham and Masturah are but two of NAFA’s many outstanding talents whose impressive accomplishments will be recognised at the upcoming Convocation Ceremony.
NAFA’s Convocation Ceremony 2017 will be held on Saturday and Sunday, 2 & 3 September 2017 at the Lee Foundation Theatre, NAFA Campus 3. Mr Peter Tay, Designer of the Year, President’s Design Award 2014, and Design Director of Peter Tay Studio, will grace the occasion as Guest of Honour at the morning ceremony on 2 September.
Over 14,000 NAFA graduates have emerged as accomplished artists, leaders, mentors and educators in the arts and creative industries. They garner accolades and awards in international competitions and exhibitions and contribute actively in an increasingly creative economy, in Singapore and beyond.
Distinguished Alumni Medal
In 2009, NAFA established the Distinguished Alumni Medal to acknowledge its outstanding alumni, an accolade which hallmarks the Academy’s history of nurturing world class talent.
