NAFA alumnus, Goh Boon Teck
During this year's Singapore International Festival of Arts, award-winning director Goh Boon Teck will present the dream of the new drama Nan Ke Yi Meng. The adaptation of "Nan Ke Ji" - A Dream Under the Southern Bough, holds the same ancient and modern theme in which "life is a dream". Goh Boon Teck expects this piece to resonate with today's society, allowing modern people to see human nature, greed, and vanity that overlap with the ancient world. In this modern-day spin on the classic Ming Dynasty opera, Toy Factory plays along the subtle divide between reality and dreamscapes. It’s a 21st century adaptation of a Kun opera from the 16th century by renowned Chinese playwright Tang Xian.
Student actors from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts also be acting in this play. Mr Goh said, “I was very willing to give them a chance to let them play some roles, from speaking roles to non-speaking roles. My idea is to give them a path into the theatre circle. NAFA’s training has laid a strong foundation for them; they are able to perform well in this drama. I think they are very prepared.” Mr Goh does not discriminate. “There are some directors who will prefer certain actors of certain schools or countries. That is not my way. Actors are actors, whether they’re from NAFA or Lasalle.”
