Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) is proud to present Flagship Genius ft. Ayutthaya II, the second edition of a hybrid exhibition comprising Flagship Genius and Ayutthaya II. Highlighting the creative potential of interdisciplinary artmaking within the academy, this double-bill exhibition showcases over 50 pieces of original works, including the outcomes of students who participated in the academy-wide project using the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ayutthaya as a creative stimulus.
Flagship Genius is an annual platform showcasing emerging talents across disciplines within NAFA. In its ninth edition, it will feature 15 selected works from the NAFA Collection. A range of found objects, mixed media and conventional oil and acrylic paintings will showcase the academic flair of recent and more established alumni.
Corresponding to the subject themes of symbols, mythology and landscapes, the featured works explore the artist-maker’s views of representation and heritage employing a unique and creative language of craft and art. Alongside the Ayutthaya-inspired offerings, the display captures diverse practices that hallmark NAFA’s innovative and exploratory spirit in search of excellence in the arts.
Ayutthaya II is an exhibition outcome of the second instalment of the academy-wide project, jointly managed and nurtured by the Institute of Southeast Asian Arts (ISEAA) and the academic schools in NAFA. The various project outcomes by students are inspired by a series of lectures and workshops on body movements involved in traditional Thai dance-drama performances such as khon, lakhon nok and lakhon nai. This academic collaboration continues to be integrated into over 120 Year-1 and -2 diploma students’ existing curriculum, expanding academic investigations of conventional disciplines into the realm of Southeast Asian art and art history.
Spotlighting talents from NAFA’s School of Art & Design, School of Music and School of Arts Management, Dance & Theatre; a diverse selection of works spanning design concept videos, contemporary sculptures, new media campaigns, fashion accessories and movement pieces will be featured, including works such as Escaliers: Pathway to Enlightenment (design concept video), Mudras (contemporary sculpture), Ramakien (performance piece), CHAI (animation storytelling video) and Heartbeat of Ayutthaya (fashion textile accessory).
Dr Bridget Tracy Tan, Director of ISEAA and Art Galleries said, “Flagship Genius ft. Ayutthaya II is a key platform that brings together students from across disciplines within NAFA. Blending independent research and historical investigation, as well as inciting a sense of adventure, the outcomes presented annually demonstrate the curiosity, lively explorations and innate creative responses befitting NAFA’s vibrant student body.”
Held in conjunction with the NAFA Open House 2021, attendees will also be able to enjoy performances by Theatre (English Drama), Dance and Music (Gamelan) students on the opening day.
