Mdm Kwan Shan Mei was a prolific illustrator who spent the peak of her career in Singapore, from 1960s-90s. Almost all Singaporeans from post-1970s and 80s were her readers, as she was then a prominent illustrator for educational publishers and had created many well-known and popular series of story & picture books, such as “Pepy and the Peacock”, “The Adventures of Mooty” etc. Mdm Kwan illustrated with varied styles, but she had always strived to pen every line with grace. She also taught illustration at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts for some years. As such, the inaugural Singapore Comic Festival 2018 has decided to pay tribute to her by exhibiting a precious collection of her original, hand-drawn illustration artworks.
The Comic Festival is a collaboration between Association of Comics & Creative Industry Exchange, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and FUNICS. Local comics illustrator Liu Jun Xian, NAFA student Kang Le and Head of Student Care & Internship Ms Oscar Ng Hwee Leng are the key planners of this exhibition.
