Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) is proud to present the Best of Best Show 2020, an exhibition that features some of the finest works by the graduating School of Art & Design (SOAD) diploma and degree cohort. Held from 17 July to 2 August, this iteration presents 35 selected pieces by young creatives from SOAD’s four programmes – Fine Art, 3D Design, Design & Media, and Fashion Studies.
Hot on the heels of SOAD’s virtual graduation showcase The eGrad Expectations 2020 (https://www.nafa.edu.sg/thegradexpectations), Best of Best Show 2020 assembles a diverse lineup of “art superheroes” that embodies NAFA’s spirit of creativity, exploration and resilience in contemplation of a ‘new normal’ in imagined and projected futures – celebrating the present through the stories that make us innately human.
Selected works include You and Me by Wong Gin Ming, BIO-U Seatings by Liu Jia Wen (ESR-Reit and NAFA collaboration), animated short film SINGAPURR by Adelyn Ong and Underwater Garden by Kritika Varjani. The exhibition’s curatorial framework is based on the current global pandemic that has impacted the graduating cohort’s completion of their final-year projects: how have these emerging art practitioners and creatives overcome adversity in uncertain times, displayed resilience and resourcefulness, refreshed ways of art making and stimulated new modes of thinking?
Ms Sabrina Long, Dean of SOAD explains the rationale for putting together this exhibition. She said, “Many talented individuals graduate from our doors yearly and their portfolios compete with other creatives from Singapore and across the globe. The Best of Best Show allows us to place our talents on a pedestal, cut through the noise and give them a moment to shine. In addition to crafting standout pieces, these graduates have also inspired their peers and exemplified the values of passion and excellence.”
“This year has been exceptionally tough on our students and faculty as they overcame challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. They have displayed extraordinary qualities with their can-do attitude and innovative solutions in weathering the storm. Moreover, they have reminded us how art continues to be an essential part of our lives through the times,” she added.
Since 2015, the Best of Best Show has been featuring top SOAD graduate works annually. This year, we invite you to witness these emergent voices, discover the fun and exciting profiles in our academy, and let our superheroes take you on a thrilling and inspiring adventure.
