BA (Hons) Creative Industry Management graduate Muhammad Norisham Osman
Dance is something that is very close to Muhammad Norisham Osman’s heart. However, when selecting a degree course at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Nafa), Norisham chose to apply for the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Creative Industry Management course, because he wanted to be able to venture into art business successfully. The knowledge of arts management is even more beneficial as Norisham is the founder of performing arts collective Kaizen M.D., which he manages with some of his friends.
On Sunday, his year of hard work proved successful when he graduated with an upper second-class honours degree, at the Lee Foundation Theatre, Nafa Campus 3. Norisham’s final-year thesis focused on the importance of academic qualifications for Malay dancers. “I see no institutes of higher learning with a special learning system for Malay dance in Singapore. Those who are interested in dance will go to Nafa or Lasalle to achieve academic qualifications in the field of dance as a whole,” he said.
When interviewed, Norisham, who also graduated from Nafa’s Diploma in Arts Management in 2011, said: “I returned to the classroom after five years. It’s a loss if you miss the opportunity to take a degree program that takes only a year. My choice from the beginning was not a dance course, although this was close to my heart, as I would rather learn about business - how can I handle the problem of a company? What should I do to attract more viewers? How do we sell our ‘art’ products? These questions are what I need to answer to manage Kaizen M.D.”
