As I reflect on the past year, I am deeply heartened by the many ways NAFA has continued to grow as an institution of learning, creativity, and cultural exchange. Over the years, I have witnessed how our students, faculty, and alumni carry the arts beyond the studio and stage, using their talents to touch lives, spark conversations, and build bridges across communities.
At the Arts & Disability Forum 2025, NAFA served as the knowledge partner in advancing conversations on representation and inclusion. The workshops and dialogues reminded us that true leadership in the arts lies in shared voices, and recognising the gap in representation and access for artists with disabilities.
The inaugural Singapore Children’s Book Festival in 2024 was a monumental moment that resonated deeply with me. As the Guest-of-Honour this year, I had the privilege of witnessing our students’ contributions first-hand. The winners of the Student Illustrator Book Prize worked closely with the publishers to bring two lovely children’s books to fruition following a year-long journey that started last year. They even brought their stories to life by narrating and presenting to the little learners at NAFA Arts Preschool. Seeing the children’s eyes sparkle with wonder and the students’ faces glow with pride was a touching reminder of how creativity can unite generations and ignite the interest in storytelling.
Our School of Dance graduation production, Crossings, featured a strong display of artistic courage and expression. Collaborating with international choreographers from Spain, Vietnam, Korea, and fellow dancers from Taipei National University of the Arts, our students pushed boundaries, explored new movement vocabularies, and created works that resonated across cultures.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the School of Young Talents brought together thousands of young musicians, dancers, actors, and artists through months of performances and exhibitions, highlighting creativity thriving across generations.
From nurturing young talents to celebrating renowned artists, NAFA supports creativity at every stage of life. The same passion that drives students continues in our alumni, whose work shapes the Singapore landscape in the arts. We are proud that the celebrated, second-generation Nanyang artist, Siew Hock Meng, was awarded the Cultural Medallion 2024 for his exceptional contributions. His mastery of pastel, oil, and allegorical works began at NAFA in 1960.
This past year's stories reflect four enduring values: care for our community, courage in creativity, cross-cultural exchange, and a commitment to craft. Together, they form the compass guiding NAFA into its next chapter.
